This is my Rudy Vey 'Spalted Maple' where the fungus causes the black lines in the maple timber, I guess a form of 'burl'.
Lovely brush !
Im not sure how it has been sealed, but seems waterproof.

Spalting is a form of decay/fungus yes, and can be done just by leaving timber on the ground for a reasonably long period of time.
Somtimes the spalting/decay can be so bad that the timber just turns to powder and cannot be turned or used. However spalting with dark coloured lines generally can be turned as the decay is not too bad and when dried stops any further decay. For really badly decayed timber it must be stabalised to make the material workable.
Burls on the other hand however are very different as they are just like cancerous growths on the tree which are very highly prized for their rich colours and very curly and irregular grain patterns. Burls also tend to be very very hard and lot more care and repeat sharpening of ones tools are required when working with burls.
