Thought you might like this wee fellow...although he is smaller than the one I had.

My old workmate was at a cafe one day and talked to a Canadian guy and his Missus (in NZ on holiday).
The guy had a forearm missing, and said he was a diver...and that a Moray had come out and grabbed his lower arm, did the typical eel twisting bite that they do, and took his forearm off. Geez...that's gotta hurt.

Missing legs used to be not uncommon with fishermen in the Channel Islands. If you pull in a big conger onto the deck, it's almost unkillable, and can do a lot of damage. All you can do is get out of the way if you can.

On the other hand, unagi. Yummm... :p

Smoked is best I reckon, or cooked in a milk sauce (just like a piece of cod).
Haven't tried an 11 secret herbs and spices method yet though.

Mmmm, that brings go mind a quote about smoked eel: "no fiercer pleasure is known to mankind". I also really like it BBQ Japanese style. I'm hungry now... :rolleyes:

I've never seen big eels in shallow water like this. Kinda cool. I've encountered big congers only in underwater caves and wrecks, and always, always, always in stupidly poor visibility. (Salvage diving sucks.) Big long beasts that can take your head off in one bite aren't exactly a barrel of laughs. :rolleyes:
