My first watch post!

Not that this is the first day I've worn a watch but the first day wearing a vintage one.

Only recently I have discovered that serial numbers date watches too and you can get a birth year watch. I couldn't run to one of the really nice 1966 Omega styles so this Timex will do.

Of course I once famously said that I only needed one razor, then discovered birth year razors and we know how that has worked out ...

I don't collect brushes and I DEFINITELY don't collect watches ...

Nice piece Mark. If you thought Razors & Butterscotch Simpsons were expensive......

Got to say I do enjoy these 'classic' style watches which have a good dimension to them - not too large in diameter, nor too thick. I don't have the biggest of wrists and some of the oversized watches these days make me look like I'm a midget.

That said, I am looking forward to the day when I purchase my first Omega SeaMaster, and then my first Rolex Submariner.

Be careful with collecting Vintage watches, or at least exclude most if not all items from places like Israel, Ukraine, Bularia, India, Argentina and even Spain.

Watch collecting is far more in vogue than razors for your average punter and has been for a long time. This means that there are a lot of people trying to make a few $$s off unsuspecting buyers, and there are a lot of frankenstein watches out there which have parts from numerous watches inside them, and dials have been (often terribly) repainted.

Another point to mention is that many of the watches from such places have been in humid conditions for their entire existence, and even if the case looks quite nice, can be horribly corroded inside.

It really is a case of buy the buyer not the watch. If they have any other shitty watches for sale then there is a good chance that what you are looking to buy is also a piece of crap.

Out of interest I bought one of these cheap watches just to see how bad they could be. The crown fell out as I was taking the watch out of the packaging, the back of the watch was almost impossible to remove (I damaged the watch doing so), and when I finally got it open, the watch inside did not match the packaging.

I did, however, manage to get most of my money back on the purchase.


Not to say yours is a franken Mark - it looks nice. This was just a warning if you do start to collect.

That said, I am looking forward to the day when I purchase my first Omega SeaMaster.

I actually own one of these a bequest from my father. Only trouble is I can't seem to keep the thing running. It will go for 3 or 4 weeks and then stop - get it cleaned new battery then the same problem. I have found an expert in Melbourne I am going to send it to as I have been assured it is the genuine article so too good to be left gathering dust in a drawer.

I doubt it is a SeaMaster then, they are either Automatics or manual wind.

Will post a picture shortly - it is indeed an automatic seamaster

If an Auto then it won't have a battery then. It needs movement from someone wearing it to wind it.

Take up straights and Honing Mark. The forest will be trimmed in no time!

This will be too funny GT if you have been paying for battery replacement on an auto :laugh:

My '75 seiko auto was running 3 seconds fast a minute. A few minutes with a watch bloke who knew his stuff and it runs about 3 seconds quick a day now.

@Egg - yes when I started to get interested I went to some watch forums. One had a thread pointing out all the problems with live eBay auctions - it was illuminating!

This was $30 - while i really don't know if original or indeed 1966 this is what it was advertised as and I figure I can't go too wrong and it is not work faking. The $1k + Omegas might have to wait for my 50th and be sourced from a rally reputable source!

The scary thing though?

I don't get much excitement about most new razors now...

The REALLY scary thing?

I'm REALLY excited about this purchase ....

I'm in at the cheap end of the scale.

While I appreciate some really expensive watches, I know I can't look after things well enough to warrant buying them. So most of mine are interesting, but really cheap (all bar one watch is less than $100). I still manage to scratch the watch faces on a regular basis, but at least with acrylic crystals you can buff that out with a bit of toothpaste.

I am finding that I like watches without complications (such as date inserts) more these days, especially if you have a few watches that you interchange as it is a pain in the arse having to forever change the date on them.

Hmm, as we would be in different price ranges, I could enable Mark for a change!
