If you've been surfin around, you'll have seen Smoggie have released this years LE brushes. Two Boars and two Finest Badgers. They're so "LE" this year that numerous outlets are selling them, and there's 4 all up instead of one.

The hype is up to 11 pages elsewhere. I don't know how people got to post teasers so freely from VS, but then I suppose they're not Simpsons, so it's ok.

The smaller sized boar is $75. Methinks someone has tapped into a willing and eager market and is having a lend.

$125 for a Finest Badger is probably what you'd expect to pay though.

I think my Smoggie fanboi-istic tendencies are wilting. A bit like some of their brushes. Nice handle though.

I'd tend to agree that the asking price for a porcine is rather steep. I'd also say unless there is a dimensional change in those pig brushes then your money is more than likely wasted.

I would disagree with your comments about the badger though Drubs - I can't see it being worth double the 730 in any way, shape or form.

Yeah, the knot sizes are 1mm difference and the lofts 5mm - that's if QC can make it so. Hasn't stopped some buying both.

Their 730 has Silvertip in it though, but you're right - twice the price for a Finest LE is steep. Other brands do sell Finest at those prices though. Whatever 'Finest' is...

Simmo's sell Best at $100+, and when you pack it tight, it might as well be Finest.

They do, and it's some sort of acrylic. So there'll be heft and longevity there. Still a big premium for that, and LE status.

Meh...same old, same old. If it wasn't for the fact I've got too many brushes already I'd buy this one in a heartbeat. Perfect size (20/48) and stunning looking little handle.

Fat chance. I 'blame' Drubs for convincing me to get the Chubster but have NO regrets at all. The MC is just cause it looks cool and the 1305 my token pig. So I'm all done!

(unless a vintage real ivory falls in my lap.....)

PS am I prone to ADs? Does the number of razors suggest that?

Ahaaa! Albeit a very small one, there's a kink in the armour. As you're hanging out on e-bay for your other disorder you should just occasionally punch in vintage shaving brush and have a look. Generally no more than 150 or so entries and you do occasionally come across some nice travel sets with nice razors too. You can kill two birds with one stone. Very little or any in the way of ivory (probably a banned item I would have thought) but some really nice unusual looking handles. Don't be scared of the restoration aspect 'cause yours truly does it for fun and material cost.

It is usually described as something else as eBay will not allow ivory to be sold. You can only import it if it is certified to be pre-treaty (CERTIES?) with HUGE fines if you don't. So you can have clearly 100 year old ivory that is impossible to get certified and import :evil:

Don't be scared of the restoration aspect 'cause yours truly does it for fun and material cost.

No, but TGN do good knots. For less than $25, it might be worth satisfying your curiosity. Pj is good. It will look like a bought one, although he will ship in Maggi tubes, which kind of drags him downmarket.

When he's back from lording it up wherever he is, he's going to reknot my Semogue 620 with a Silvertip. TGN Best, isn't really. Could do with more stuffing and a bit softer, which the Silvertips should be.

Yeah I confess to be in two minds about ivory. I would certainly not buy anything that had any hint of being post the ban. I don't want any part of that.

On the other hand the history and beauty of 100 year old ivory is something special. It was a legal product at the time and while possibly misguided it was just what they did. It is probably the 'bit of history' that appeals most to me.

The only downfall with restoration is that you're stuck with whatever knots you can get hold of. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to learn how to tie your own knots but that's taking it a bit too far. TGN have a good range of badger hair knots some better than others but in the bigger (22-24mm upwards) there's a big variety of denser knots that will rival Simpsons I'm sure.

The Maggi chicken cube containers are a subtle way of counteracting the beastial stench of badger.
