Shavemac 177 Silvertip brush

Rusty Bridges

Owns a betacord/betamax
I noticed a few locals have been calling into question the quality of the 177 Shavemac brush. Has any other owners of this brush noticed any issues.
I bought this brush 2+ years ago but never got around to using it so I am a bit nervous and can't comment personally on its quality but I do know that the brand Shavemac is well respected so I thought I'd reach out to everyone here and find out what's actually up with it.
Oddly Mensbiz seems to have dropped the price significantly, is this a sign of the lack of confidence in the brush?

Negative feedback: Link to Shavemac Reviews on Menzbiz

Shavemac is one of the most well regarded shave brush brands out there and I have never heard a bad word about them.

Having said that, there can always be a shedding issue with a brush. If you buy from Shavemac, Bernd will most definitely take great care of you. So these reviews reflect the (lacking?) customer service of Menzbiz and not the quality issue of Shavemac.

Having said that, even if you did buy your brush through a third party, I would first contact the vendor, but if that fails through, I would contact Shavemac directly. I am sure they would still take great care of you.

No issues with mine (bought second hand about a year ago).

I know @Osman can also comment and I think there's a few others floating around.

The brush pictured has a different logo stamp to mine so I wonder if there's an issue with the latest batch? If you bought a few years ago I'd say you'd be fine. Shavemac do make a great brush usually.

I totally agree with you both on many points and I will have to look into my brush and see what sort of logo it has as it has been a long while since I have looked at it.
I was baffled by the reviews myself as it seemed totally out of character for a brush of this level and I have heard really good things about Shavemac's customer service and support. I honestly thought it was something of a new issue regarding an odd batch but I believe I read some long time owners tune in with similar issues.

I expect that any brush will shed a few hairs within the first few uses (maybe even a week or two of daily shaves) and also wonder if this is due to some people being too heavy handed or something.
It's good to get some sort of feedback and I appreciate everyone's input on the matter.

I might go see if I can dig up my Shavemac 177 brush :)

I completely didn't notice the logo changes that @filobiblic noted.

Ironically, high end badger brushes can sometimes be problematic; more money does not mean you will never have any issues. High grade badger hair is hard to work with, it is very fine. When you make very dense handfilled knots like Simpson and shavemac, it can be very difficult to eliminate shedding, as some hairs will not make contact with the glued bottom. More often than not, this is a temporary thing, a few loose hairs dislodge during first use. Faulty knots will keep doing it. Simpson seem to have more issues than most, and it does seem rarer with shavemac, but can't be discounted. It's the nature of the product.

FWIW, the reviewers have little knowledge of this process, and so any shedding at all is seen as a huge problem, given the $$ spent. Many shedding issues can be fixed by combing out the knot til it all the loose hairs are removed. Faulty knots don't stop shedding and will be covered by warranty. But after I sent two simpsons back for shedding and received 'free' brushes, the postage for both these cost me over $50, so my interest in them dwindled to nil. I'd paid overs, waiting time and hassle, to get a working brush.

I have stuck to the TGN knots that were re knotted in old handles, and synthetics. Not a day's trouble from either of them, or any omega boar I've had. Expensive badgers are sometimes just not worth the hassle.

That's why I stick with Frank's Shaving brushes
Because you know they are going to shed in any case :D :D :D

The reason why there are not so many well regarded brush makers and even knot resellers out there is exactly that: Warranty

Shavemac is great in this regard, but so is Larry from Whipped Dog, Gifts & Care...

So it is not only important what brush to buy, but who you buy it from...

I had the exact same issues with the 177. It was shedding 10 hairs at a time. This was after 6 months use. I returned it to Mensbiz (who were excellent about it) for a full refund. In all honesty if I had liked the brush I could have lived with it, but the 177 was too floppy for my taste.

Shavemac are an excellent company though, and their reputation for aftercare is what led me to give them another chance, and boy am I glad that I did. I have a 2 Band which is excellent and has not shed a single hair. There's another on the way too.

Had one in the past no issues was a sound brush. It has been known that you can get shedding from batches in that a number of people using the Semogue 1305 as an example one of which I have in the Den and a couple of others who I know to have had them and others of which of which one member @nsavage was getting a few hairs drop out from the word get go if my memory serves me. So it can be isolated in a majority of cases
