Hey guys! I'm an entrant into the world of wet shaving! Funnily enough I bought a shavette last year to try out thinking that it was a straight razor, and managed to do some simple shaves with it just going down the cheeks. But after a couple of runs of that I kept a beard for the whole year lmao

Recently I was in the mood for a change of face so I chopped off my facial hair. Oddly enough, immediately after this shave I fell down the rabbit hole of r/wickededge and decided that I HAD TO TRY a safety razor. So that's where I'm at now! Will be buying a beginner's double edge razor (tryna find something cheap cos I'm a student ;)

After looking at all these pictures of people's products, the urge to buy at least something was too strong so I ordered some proraso aftershave balm and some green proraso shaving soap off themodernman.co.uk

Apart from that, mensbiz has a vie-long horse hair brush that goes for $29 which has decent reviews - do you reckon it's worth it as a first brush? (tbh even 29 seems expensive for a brush but gotta spend where you gotta spend I guess).

PS: the haircuts at mensbiz are absolutely killer, their fades are so fresh it's almost orgasmic haha

Welcome @SnowedAway :)
Funnily enough I used a Vie Long Horsehair brush this morning - they are nice brushes, sort of a mix between badger and boar in texture. There were some reports of shedding but mine has been great so far. Boar brushes are cheaper, and I would probably recommend a nice Semogue boar brush to start with - maybe a 610 or 820 with the acrylic handle or a 1250 with the wooden handle.

Lots of good Aussie artisans here (Australian Private Reserve, Squadron Soaps) who make awesome soaps and splashes.:)

Welcome @SnowedAway . My experience has only been with silver-tip badger brushes so I can't help there. I know the stray whisker, mensbiz and a bunch of other shaving stores will offer a starter pack.
I think you should save a bit and make sure you get something of good quality that will last. After that you'll have soaps, blades and other upgrades to explore :)

Welcome onboard, mate.

Regarding the brush, as @Snooze already mentioned, maybe is good to go for a board brush like semogue's range (I have one on my home from TSW). I have no experience with horsehair brushes and I reckon they are the most sheldom used ones, but this is a guess.
cheers

Welcome. Wishing you many happy shaves :)
