Hello Everyone

I used to shave with a twin blade razor and moved on to electric, using the twin when I felt like a proper shave. It's always bugged me about how much twin blades cost.

When I was a young bloke I used to use my dad's DE razor occasionally and thought to myself I'm going back to that. I vaguely remember Dad's razor was adjustable so went on Ebay and picked myself up a nice Fatboy in an original box and just for good measure bought a Slim too. I also bought 100 Feathers, some Taylors of Old London preshave oil and soap and a nice antique shaving bowl.

For my first shave I want with a setting of 5 and while a bit daunting at first, quickly gained confidence. I was going great guns till I tried to get in too close to my nose and took a good chunk of skin off the side of it. I was impressed with the shave I got for a single pass. Next time I kept well away from the nose.

I found shaving with the Fatboy a challenge due to how heavy and chunky it is. I'm looking forward to giving the Slim a go and seeing how much difference there is. I found the ritual of taking a shower, using the preshave oil, the lather then aftershave all with a sandalwood scent to be very satisfying.

I'll still be using the electric for midweek shaves before work, but sunday arvo is always going to be about the shave.

cheers Browndog

Welcome mate!

Seems you are walking a path well travelled by others here :)

Once you get some more confidence and experience those mid-week shaves will be DE as well. How long have you been at it?

Welcome @Browndog - I am sure you will have a great time here (y)

What brush and soap/cream did you choose for your shave?

Thanks for the welcome guys, Mark I've only shaved twice last two Sundays. Third coming up this weekend with the Slim. Alfredus I must admit to skimping on the brush it was a $30 one from the Shavershop, seems nice enough though. I'm using Taylor of old Bond Street sandalwood preshave oil and Taylor of old Bond Street sandalwood shaving cream. I love the aroma.

Third times a charm they say :)

It is early days though and you will improve rapidly with practice. Try to keep as much as possible constant. The Feathers are renown as the sharpest blade around but a little unforgiving as a result. if they are working to date stick with them, but later on experiment with others too.

If this is the brush - http://www.shavershop.com.au/online-store/blade-shavers/shave-brushes/wahl-boar-shave-brush.html it is a boar brush so will soften over time. There are lots of boar fans here who can give you some tips.

While we talk a lot (some would say INCESSANTLY) around here about fancy artisan products, which IMHO are often better, the TOBS cream is where many of us started and products a great lather easily - so enjoy!

Welcome @Browndog
Enjoy learning to shave and actually enjoying the process and result. [emoji6]

Does your father still use a DE?

Welcome ! I too started my wet shaving with the TOBS Sandalwood cream. Really good choice. Very strong on the scent and super easy to make a cushy lather.

Really glad to hear that you're enjoying the shaving, I really think that's what it's all about - making shaving pleasant :)

Hope to see you around on the forums!

Hey Browndog, welcome mate. Good to have more Brisbanites around. Some great advice on here, and certainly endorse consistent gear to start. If you want to try some different blades or soaps when you're comfortable with the DE, just sing out.

Thanks Guys, Mark, the brush I got is this one http://www.shavershop.com.au/online...brushes/il-barbiere-badger-shaving-brush.html it seems pretty good. Filobiblic, My Dad is 90 now and I believe he still uses his DE. Havachat, by that I guess you mean a straight razor, I don't think I'd ever have the balls to try one.

Ahh, OK, so an entry level badger. It should soften a little with use too - but will not be as firm to start as a boar.

You might have to catch up with your Dad and get some lessons from him too!

What's your current favourite soap or cream Browndog ?

Welcome to the forum too mate :)

Taylors of of Bond Street is the only soap I have at the moment and i quite like it, from the sounds of it there are better soaps out there. Is there any way to upload a picture to a post without having it linked to a URL? I'd like to show you guys a shot of my razors.
