Just got into wet shaving

Starting to think whether i should just get the speick shaving stick + a tub of proraso from mens biz, which should put me over the $20 limit for free shipping (not sure whether a discount code would invalidate the free shipping though).

How long does a 50g stick last compared to 150ml of soap?
 
The Proraso is a cream if I'm not mistaken. In my experience creams don't last anywhere near as long as the equivalent volume of a hard soap such as the Speick stick. I couldn't say that it would last as long as I've never done a comparison but I don't think it would be too be far off it.
 
Use BB2014 at checkout for $15% off. I don't think it affects the free shipping. If using daily, I'd expect up to 6 months from a tube of proraso, I burn through the soap faster, probably just use more loading the brush.

We all have masses of soaps and creams because they last ages. Sounds too vague right? Check out all the hectic action in the thread about products we have finished. You could drive a car down the main street of that thread, because this stuff lasts a long time. You're unlikely to use one single product day in day out until it is gone. That just isn't going to happen. I still have sticks and pucks of soaps from two years ago, barely used, creams that have taken me a year to use, the list is endless.

If you needed some firmer guides, using a 150mL bowl of soap every day with average loading of the brush, you would probably expect it to last 8-12 months. I've never finished a stick of soap. Those things just go on forever, like Glen's posts.

Not true, just finished my tub of TOBS. Admittedly it was the sample you gave me but I was determined not to let that insignificant fact beat me. But otherwise, yes, you're basically right. I still have the remnants of a home made stick of Tabac I made three years ago. And I really like Tabac.
 
I've been here two years, and only just finished my first tube of Proraso. Admittedly Darwin is a little bit more relaxed about facial hair than most places, so I probably don't shave as frequently as some.

Admittedly a tub of TOBS sandalwood isn't far behind it in being finished, but that is because Mrs Egg has also been using it as I was not too keen on the smell.
 
Wow...i wonder how manufacturers sell enough shaving soap, etc to be profitable then.

Actually i think it took me more than a year to finish one can of shaving gel too...somehow i dont think buying a can a year is enough to keep these guys afloat.

Yeah it is and not many of the standard ones seem to go under. Not only that but there are new artisan soap makers popping up regularly too. It must be as cheap as hell to produce.

Gillette make 4000% profit on their blades and sell $billions of them. I don't think they're worried about the cans that much.

Most of the traditional soap and cream makers are smaller concerns, but will still have a viable niche. Proraso appears one of those everyday supermarket brands in Europe.

It's quite funny how the two main local stores are based in Melbourne though. Unfortunately the one in Sydney folded about 12 months ago, and Pureman in Brisbane is not really doing much either.
 
I just had a look a that himage site. Some of those Muhle Pinsel HJK Boars look good - the handles at least. "Pure bristle" doesn't really sound reassuring though...but $30 for a good handle, now that's pretty good.

The Vulfix 2189 (which also is stocked by Himage) is a great brush. Got one in boar/badger. It's fairy small. Pure bristle just refers to the fact that they use boar. Unlike pure badger which is the pure black badger hair that's quite scritchy (don't mind it myself). It's not factually true because they take pure boar bristle and do a bad job staining it to look like two band badger. Doesn't affect how the knot behaves, but I've never understood why boar brush manufacturers do that.

There's no grades of boar bristle as such. Semogue try and infer there is by calling theirs premium, but it isn't. It's pretty unpremium, if you consider they give you less of them than other makers.
