Lapping Film

That is basically what I use when lapping valves and seats at work. Gets it good enough to hold 1100Psi of steam.

Yep. That's it. Good. Cheap.
But... I'd say that if you want to really get into it then nothing beats the stones.

No lapping required at least!

Not sure if I do, just poking around.
 
I have been using lapping film for a couple of years now. I bevel-set on synthetic whetstones, refine on lapping film up to 1μm (about 25k) and then finish on diamond pasted balsa strops (0.5μm, 0.25μm & 0.1μm).

I started using lapping films only because decent whetstones were not readily available. Unless you are honing a lot of SR's, lapping film is a good economical medium to use for honing.
