With the recent upgrade, you can mention a member which will then give them an alert that someone is talking about them.
It's done the same way as Twitter, just add an @ in front of their username and when you submit the post it will be turned into a link. If you are not 100% sure of their exact username off the top of your head, just give it the first character and it should present you with a small popup to select the username from.
