........... I have 70 odd SE blades 60 Spoilers 80 Gillette Platinums and my 50 Slick Schicks plus of course 9 Voskhods...........these may quite possibly see me out.........

If you only shave when you start looking like a Neanderthal, then you have way too many.

So what have you got against neanderthals? My parents Og and Ug might have to pay you a visit (if they can ever get the wheel invented).

So you open to a straight swap - a brand new tube of palmolive for your slightly used LaToja?

I was inspired by Ybbor last night to try La Toja for the first time. I've never used a shave stick in my life (despite having a bunch), because it always seemed easier to just load my brush from a bowl. Bit ridiculous that I hadn't tried it sooner in hindsight, my only trouble was with how much water to have in my brush when I started working up the lather. I got stuck in a little cycle of too much water making the lather thin, but then having it dry on my face. Next time, I'll just use more soap and that should sort me out. As far as the La Toja goes, it's up there with the best of my current kit. Ticks all the boxes for protection/cushion, slickness and ease of use. It's inferior to the Mike's Natural for moisturising, but so is everything else I've used. Nice scent, not hugely strong, and it didn't linger on my skin which is favourable. It'd be nice if they made it in a bowl, but I'll start taking shave sticks whenever I travel now.

I also had a crack with a yellow Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge, which I'd heard was pretty sharp. I probably expected a little too much of it, but I was a little underwhelmed. Feels a little less sharp than a Polsilver brown or a Personna Lab, more like a Personna Red but slightly more smooth. I got a decent shave from it, but it was a bit rough to start and didn't cut as cleanly as I'd have liked. All that said, it's hard to fault the irritation-free result and it was a pretty close shave. I probably wouldn't buy more, but I will persist with this one. I had it in the iKon SB, so perhaps it will benefit from a milder razor.

I've swapped my Duke 2 with my old man's Colonel X2L for a week. The Colonel is a great brush for face lathering, less density compared to the Duke is better I think. The hair in this brush feels a little different to my Duke, it's noticeably softer and a little floppier. I know that the Duke is packed with more hair, but it was also naturally more prickly and resistant. It's softened up now, but I'm convinced that they're from two different batches of hair. In this case, natural variation has been a good thing. Dad likes softer brushes, and I like the firmness and slight scritch. Luck of the draw as to what you get from the manufacturer, but in this case, it was a good thing.

I'd say it's a pity they don't make more soaps in shave stick form (althought they're quite easy to make from a puck). You can always grate your stick of La Toja in to a bowl. It's easy, just make sure to really clean the grater afterwards!

With regards the brush/water, just dip the tips in to start with and keep dipping the brush in as you go along. Don't rub too much soap on your face. It's surprising how little you really need. Too much and you end up with gobs of the stuff all over the brush and halfway up your arm. Nearly all my soaps are in stick form and if they weren't sticks to start with they were soon transformed.

By the way, how could you have been inspired to use La Toja by the ybbor post? He thought it second best to Pamolive. A serious put off in my book. Palmolive looks and smells like something you should treat open wounds with.

I thought about grating it, but I'm heading overseas in a couple of months and I'm thinking I'll take it with me then.

Cheers for the advice. I think the brush was a little wet to begin with, but I found it unusual that I was getting watery lather in the brush, but dry lather on the face. Slower water injection and more scrubbing to mix on my face sounds like the way to go.

To be honest, I'd forgotten that I even had the La Toja. I saw the picture and remembered that it was in a drawer. You folks rag on the Aussie Palmolive a lot, and to be fair, I haven't tried it. I have the Italian menthol one though, and my old man has the regular Italian cream with palm oil, and they're both excellent. Really slick and nice on the skin. Should I go find the Aussie one to get a perspective? How bad can it be?

This is really hard to say being someone with SAD, i have many many better smelling and more expensive soaps, but the Palmolive tube for me just gives a smoother cut. Palmolive just seems to make the hair easier to cut somehow. GF did say it smelt like toilet soap tho :p.

LaToja is the best sick i have used, i like the smell and the lather is fantastic. Back to trying to use up a taylors sandalwood, nice smell but not as smooth shave.

I am in madrid so raced out to get the la toja and lea sticks. For like 3 euro total.

Followed up my previous effort with a very cruisy Sunday arvo shave. Continued with the La Toja, this time my lather was too wet. That was my fault, I went back to the Duke which holds a lot more water than the Colonel. I think I'll have a go with an Omega boar for a while after this, I'll stick with one brush until I'm getting it right and I haven't given the #45 a go for a while. La Toja continues to impress.

The yellow Gillette was a disappointment today. I was hoping it might excel in a milder razor, but it seems to have dropped off in sharpness quite a bit after just one shave. It was in a Tech head with a Bulldog handle, a combination that's worked extremely well for me in the past. Today produced a shave that can only be described as fair. Average smoothness, slightly rough feel around the neck, and the drop off in sharpness lead to some drag during the first pass. The SharpEdge will get one more shave in the Schick Krona to see if it can be salvaged, and if not I'll move on. I think I may have just experienced the compensation provided by the aggressive iKon SB head for average blades. After I finish with this yellow, I have green and black Gillette's to try too. After being so impressed with the Maltese Plat's, I'm bummed out about these.

Doing my usual two blade comparison. One razor with a vintage Shick and the other with whatever takes my fancy, in this case the PSS. Identical razors. Just had shave No 5 with the Shick and there really is no comparison. I still think the PSS is better than your average blade but not on the same planet as a Shick. Anyhow aside from the blades, have been using an Iirish Moos stick. One of my favourite scents actually. Real shame they're out of production. Anybody know of a cache of the stuff somewhere? I bought this stick off the last German online store to have any stock. Should have bought a few more but then I didn't know what it was like.

Apparently, old blades can be dated by the markings on them.

So today I have been shaving with a french razor blade marked K1, which means it harks back from the first quarter of 1965 - predating the venerable spoilers by a year or two. Perfectly nice shave too. Will have to see how many shaves they last.

The Schick is excellent. PSS is just very good. Schpoiler is somewhere in between for me. Irisch Moos was one I always had an eye on but never got to. Sounds like I missed out!

Interesting on the Yellow Sharpedge Mong. I kinda found that one to be like an exaggerated Astra SP, sharp and rough...not my cup of tea at all.

Spoiler encouraged me to push things last week. Got a bit of irritation on the neck. One day I will learn...maybe.
