......Semogue 830...I really need a new brush!........

Strange....I thought you were a man of many talents and many brushes. How about get a real boar brush, like an Omega? Simpson best is as good as it gets as far as badger goes.

I have a couple more brushes but the inclination to use them is fairly low.

The Frankshave is a novelty though better than some suggest.

The Vie Long is good but I'm not really using any hard soaps at the moment where it shines.

Omega...pfft. Rubbish handles and sold at the barbers. No den cred available there :P

Is that a Frankenshave, or a Frank Shaving brush?

The latter is the better of the two brushes I own. My other is a $5 Omega from Mustapha's in Singapore.

I did see a Wee Scot going for about $35 somewhere recently and wondered about buying it, but I lost the link before I could ask if it was a worthwhile purchase here.

It's a remarkable little brush. For the life of me can't recall how much I paid for mine. Got it direct from Vulfix. Most of my other brushes aren't really that much bigger. Would be great if there was another Wee owner here. Using one makes you wonder why most brushes are so much bigger.

It was Brendan over at B&B in his sale thread here. Still available I think. I was thinking of picking it up to see how it went but figured I would end up wanting a butterscotch one so would wait for that instead - I'll find one eventually. I also have a Culmark with a similar size hole to be re-knotted *sometime*

Yep, after using my Butterscotch Simpson 10 for a while I've decided that I'm not a big brush person. I'm selling it and the Somerset Chubby 3 I just had re-knotted and sticking with the smaller ones.

What is this "Somerset Chubby 3" of which you speak Mark?

Mine is a Frankshave Silvertip 21mm IIRC Eggy. It works well and is like rubbing a cloud on your face. It does need a bit more backbone though to make it easier to use. I think the brush has negative backbone.

That'll be hard to find I would have thought. If you can wait 20 odd years maybe I'll sell you mine (maybe not!). In the interim I'll just stick mine out in the sunshine to speed up the butterscotching.

Do the current ones change colour like the old ones? I thought not.

Yes it will be hard to find - but it is nice to have a goal. I think I've see one a long time ago

Sorry, Somerset era Simpson Chubby 3. Purchased on eBay and it was the worst shedder I've ever seen. It arrived while I was away for Christmas - too late to lodge a dispute, seller a pain. No joy there.

I sent it off to Mark at Simpson to re-knot - not cheap for a Chubby 3 knot!!!!

It is a beautiful knot and will be lovely to use if you like large brushes - but I've realised I don't. $300 is not even covering my costs on this :sad2:

Sorry to hear that Mark. Good on you for your dedication though- getting it re-knotted by Simpson themselves is pretty cool!

That knot does look pretty buggered. And for the uninitiated, Somerset refers to the time Simpson had a factory in Somerset. As with all things collectable, this makes brushes from that time more collectable and also means that the glue used to hold the knot in place is animal based and the brush likely to be a serious shedder, unless you can find one that's NOS.

I've had a couple done by them now. Not cheap but I think worth it in the case of 'special' brushes. The Chubby 3 re-knot cost me a smidge more than BOTH the earlier ones I had combined. It shows the impact of size and density in the Chubby

I have dubbed it, “The Great Shedder”.

I picked it up late last year on eBay but it didn’t arrive before I went on holidays and the dispute period has elapsed before I got back and picked it up (didn’t think of that at the time). It was described as 'Good shape but that 'bristles do come out on every shave' which is an understatement. According to the seller it has 'Lots of life left in it' – but not in its current condition, this is the worse shedder I've ever seen! You may have seen worse but it is a shocker.

Re-knotted though - it is magnificent! I'm expecting Drubs to snap it up when I post my sale thread

Think I have decided against the Wee Scot for the time being. He is asking $35 +$5 postage.

Brand new off the Simpsons website they are only $42. Obviously I would have to pay delivery from the UK on top of that, but would have the benefit of a brand new brush never used by anyone else.

Double Edge seems to be the best place to buy Simpsons since they introduced price fixing and with free postage BUT they don't have the Wee Scott.

I am starting to think (again) that maybe I am better off with my limited collection of hardware.

If I don't know there is stuff that is a lot better out there than I currently own then I can't lust after it.

That's a ridiculous thing to say

And this is just sticking your head in a bucket of sand. You might as well go live in Darwin.........

+1 - stop this nonsense NOW.

Go look at my pics and get some ADs man!

Just to be boring and interrupt this exciting program with shaving news I have shaved three times since my last post (my name is Glen and I am a compulsive shaver). Using a boar brush, a soap I acquired from someone in a lovely plastic tub (sorry soemone, I struggle to remember my name at times) and the mighty Slim (I puzzle to work out why everyone on the board does not have a Slim dialled up to 6 or 7, right RM - greatest razor ever made). The blade continues to be a Gillette that I bought 100 of from NtK. Very nice very smooth very happy. Just waiting for the travelling kit to try some smelly that hopefully lasts more than 5 minutes and both she and I like ( second thoughts forget the I as long as she likes it I will be a happy chappy).

What have you tried so far GT?

Back off topic.

I do have the gold fatboy coming, and have a bid in on a slim as you all keep insisting that we try them. But I am only succumbing to peer pressure, I know I don't need them really.
