After four months of growth through the dry season, it was finally time to take the beard off — and I decided to do it in the most satisfying way I know: a single pass with a straight razor.

This wasn’t just a shave; it was a bucket-list moment.

I reached for my Mastro Livi Grifetto, a razor I trust completely, and gave it a fresh edge using the coticule with the dilucot method. Honing it was part of the ritual — slow, deliberate, and rewarding.

I’ve long suspected that a well-honed straight razor doesn’t care if it’s facing 24-hour stubble or four months of dense beard. It’ll cut through it all the same — and this one did exactly that. No drama. Just clean, efficient mowing, hair by hair.

The Grifetto lived up to its reputation, and the shave was everything I hoped it would be.

Hi all,
I had an interesting shave tonight with a Gillette model 100 the serial number on the base plate dates 1904 (pictured).
It’s quite clear by the quality of the shave Gillette still had a way to go to perfect the shave that would make them famous.
I started the shave with a Gillette vintage blade from the same era which I tried to hone with a vintage DE hone design for this job (pictured) adding a bit of water to it and following the instructions.

I gave up on the blade after the third downward stoke when it nicked my cheek causing a good bleeder and quickly change to a Wizamet blade.
It was tugging way to much to give a safe reasonably comfortable shave.
(Either I made the blade worse by attempting to hone it or men were clearly tougher 100 years ago.)
That’s one of the amazing things about using these old razors.
It’s 121 years old ! older than just about any person who has ever lived.
After the blade change the shave was decent enough even though by the second pass I had a bright red trial going down to my jaw line.:ROFLMAO:

Give one a try if you haven’t already they’re still reasonably easy to pick up and not too expensive even if you just pick up the head and base plate and put it into a later handle.

TGS soap worked really well providing good cushioning and aftershave feel as expected from these fine soaps.

Nicely finished off with CK Eternity splash.
And a bit work with the Alum block to seal the nick.:)

One pass WTG one pass ATG with some touch ups Done.

One nick No worries.

Cheers.

"the serial number on the base plate dates 1904" - nope, this is a 1916 production, see here. Still over 100 years old, but the 1904 are VERY rare.
