Shave of the day

Does everyone who starts this have the moment where they realise they're just gunna have to get a Simpson?

I got my lot of the Mike's Natural Soap and had a really nice shave with the lime one. The moisturising properties are no exaggeration, my skin feels pretty damn good tonight. I didn't have any trouble whipping up a good lather with the Foo. MNS seems to need a reasonable amount of water to get it going, my lather was getting a bit dry on my face so I'll need to kick it up a notch next time.

I busted out one of the original Super Iridiums in the 34C tonight for the first time too. Very similar to the Polsilver Super Iridiums, maybe just a little bit better. I'll make a thread about them in a few days, but I'm pretty impressed. A real smooth shave.

I finished with a sample of St Johns Bay Rum with Lime. Pleasant and fairly long lasting smell, nice amount of burn as it went on. Followed it with the Nivea balm, my skin is feeling really fresh and clean right now.

The moisturising qualities are the true point of difference for them IMHO. I'm a sales and marketing background and a really genuinely good product needs a true point of difference, not just a brand name or wanky marketing claims. A lot of the other soaps I've tried have been good in some aspects but they really don't separate themselves from others in any areas of benefit.

I'm sure lots of others smell as good as these. A lot of the top soaps will also give an uber-slick lather that is on par with this....but I've not found anything thats as good at making your skin feel like it's already had toner & moisturiser applied! Most good soaps tend to leave your skin feeling a tad needy.....test it out by applying nothing after a shave and see how you feel. These soaps excel in this regard.

Good to hear I'm not alone in my perceptions. Enjoyed the feedback. :-)

I have to admit getting a Wee Scot. But that was more to see how something that small would work. And it does. But other than that I haven't been tempted by anything else they've got on offer.

I've had a moment where I've thought "Gee I wish someone would PiF a Simmo", Does that count? :P

If I was going to spend money on an upper level Simmo I think I'd probably go with a custom Shavemac of some sort instead - nicer handles!

  • Gillette Slim @5/3
  • MNS Barbershop
  • Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Platinum (black wrapper) - shave #1
  • Vie-Long 12705

Not really impressed with the Gillette SOC Super Plats.......IIRC these are made in India and they aren't up to the grade of the St Pete made SOC's IMHO. Don't get me wrong they were reasonable enough - but marginally better than an Astra SP - so nothing high end at all. I'll try another few times but based on the shave last night these are well and truly in the caste below the PSS's, Polsilvers and even the SOC Yellows.

These had average sharpness and average smoothness - I was underwhelmed as a lot of folks had said good things about them but they kind of met my expectations as an Indian made blade. I don't mean this in a nasty way but I've never tried any blades from India that have been anything more than mediocre at best.

MNS Barbershop is my least fave of the scents....in hindsight I should have gone for something a bit more punchy, it's a tad sweet - but the missus swears its one of the nicer ones. Go figure.

The Vie-Long is coming along ok - needs a fair bit more use to feel broken in, seems quite firm in the middle, great handle but still deciding if it's the massive value buy the Yanks speak it up to be.

  • I have the exact opposite experience. The SOC black fares much better for me than its russian (blue wrap) equivalent.

Just finished a week with an indian green SOC. It did OK till its 6-7th shave where it was really running out of sharp. Comfort/smoothness was still present. I'll be moving to the russian green which my memory reckons were better than the indian green.

    All using gillette flaretip.

Interestly and just reinforcing how much different razors affect the performance of certain blades - had my 2nd shave with the SOC Black however this time in my Merkur Slant - was much better.

Really very enjoyable......now I still think it wasn't quite at the level of the PSS etc but it was noticeably better than the 1st time. That said I've felt that certain blades are more 'enjoyable' on their 2nd usage, so this could be one of them.

The rest of the shave was done with MNS Orange/Cedar/Pepper (lovely stuff) and the BestShave Donkey brush, which is such a good little performer.

Adding on to this theme, I switched the Super Iridium from the 34C to the Fatboy and was surprised to find that I had a really average shave. It was usable on the more aggressive settings on the razor, but the 'comfort factor' that I seek when I shave was missing this time. Back to the Merkur for the SI, I wish I never left.

I tried Trumpers Rose too. It was pretty pleasant, but I won't be buying more anytime soon.

Just finished up. Nice shave for this AM,

Was again a TM shave as I had a solid 3 days growth. In all truth I should have clippered it down first but I was lazy lol

Lathered up with GZD Berber stick.

First pass with the SE

Subsequent passes with the 34C and a Gillete SOC Yellow.

It was a great shave. Finished up with Alum and Witch Hazel.

Now onto face the working week

Speick stick. Every time I use it I wonder why I bother with anything else.
Featherweight.

Back to SE after a prolonged spell of DE. Closest shave I've had for a prolonged spell too. Hate to say it folks but as far as I'm concerned there's not a DE blade I've tried that comes close.

PM your address PJ - I am inclined to agree with you but am quite happy to send you a couple of (really really) cheap Spoilers for your comparison.

Really good shave with Trumpers Sandalwood, 34C and the PermaSharp Super this evening. I'd never tried a PSS before, but now they're coming with me to Vietnam. I'm on the 1AM flight tonight, so god willing, I'll be back in 2-3 weeks with a few Vietnamese and Singaporean shaving goodies.

I'm taking a Gillette Tech, No. 6 horsey, Arko, with PSS and Vokshod blades. We'll see how budget shaving goes for a couple of weeks! Take it easy fellas.

Been busy, but I have shaved with a Gillette Platinum Plus blade on the weekend and yesterday morning.

I didn't think there was a better blade than the Spoiler, but this glides better, seems just as sharp and just as smooth.

Did get some irritation from where I really attacked the whiskers, reminded me that quality blades can bite if you get too enthusiastic.

Hold on RM! Aren't the Gillette Platinum Plus blades still in production?

Anyhow BOT......

Tabac stick. Every time I use this stuff I...............
GEM Bullet tip with GEM ptfe on No 2.

It's beginning to sound like fanboyism but honestly folks....I don't know why after all this time it still surprises me. Compared to even your average MUM DE blade the SE blade sounds rough and feels rough too but if you can get over that (and I think this is where most hook off when trying SE) the result is amazing.

Yes SYD, it's bloody frightening how attractive I look. Lock up your daughters! And then I woke up
