Shave of the day

Ages ago I bought a selection of soaps/ creams and some razors from an Aussie YKW (Bonzo I think?) that included a tiny (5 or 10ml) sample of Martin de Candre croap.

I tried it once, and wasn't that impressed with it, but decided to try again this evening.

I used less than half of the tiny sample, but got masses of lather, and what (if fresh) would seem to be quite a nice smell, but now was quite badly faded.

Very nice shave with a cheapie Omega boar brush, and the trusty EJ89. Not sure what the blade was, but think its due a change next shave.

@Sam - sounds like a great place

@eggbert - bonzos_beard in QLD I suspect. Interesting that the MdC gets lots of love YKW

  • Fatboy on 9
  • Spoiler, about 4 or 5 shaves down
  • Arko, facelathered with
  • VieLong 13710 Horsey

Smooth, effortless shave. Great way to start the day

Fatboy sounds good, but on 9 ???

Spoiler - tick

Arko - hmmmm

VieLong - no horse for me, maybe I NEED one...

Not sure if my post came across properly. It was a really nice lather - I think the first time I tried it I just hadn't used enough cream/soap.

I've not shaved in two days.

I have those three vintage (Tetanus Tango) blades to use yet.

Saving myself for them.

Shaved this morning which is out of my normal routine of shaving every Sunday.
It was my 3rd shave with my straight and 1st shave with not a lot of stubble. I managed to not nick myself with my first (and only) pass with my straight. I then switched it up to my Merkur Progressive with a 7 o'clock gillette blade. I left the dial on my Progressive turned right down to 1 and went to work removing the left overs mostly in a WTG pass followed by a XTG pass. Probably one of the smoothest shaves I have ever had.

Gillette SS Red Tip
Feather
Arko
Vie long Brush
Speick balm

This is a combo I had been meaning to try for a while now. Not for the faint-hearted!

Result- good, but not the best shave I've ever had. More and more I am convinced that the best match for Feathers are fairly mild razors. In something like a red tip, you get a good shave but I've had better using a Feather in something like a 1940s style SS or my 38C.

Managed to not nick or cut myself, which I half expected given the razor/blade combo :amazed:

Will keep shaving with this over the coming days- might see an improvement.

Almost grew a beard. hadn't shaved for a couple of days, and the shave is so much easier and smoother.

omega boar
'shave' cream
permasharp super
r41 1st pass
flare ss for the rest.
cold tap only (fairly warm today)

Fine shave.

I could never get that stuff to work :(

If by work you mean building up a huge big lather, yeah I understand. I used the same amount of cream as I would for proraso but don't get as much lather, enough for 2 passes. The proraso would do double the lather.

I can't really claim to be able to grow a 'proper' beard, I don't get thick enough coverage on my cheeks. I was starting to look a little feral though, so I geared up. Some shaves seem to go especially well and leave you feeling really fly, and this was one of 'em.

  • Merkur 34C w/ Super Iridium (4th)
  • GFT Sandalwood
  • Omega 49
  • Alum
  • Nivea Sensitive Post-Shave Balm

I had been enjoying the alum, but now I find that it really dries and cleans my skin a bit too much. While it does leave my skin feeling fresh and sterilised, I also found that it removed the great moisturised feeling that Mike's Natural Soap leaves on your face. Much the same after the Trumpers last night. I like the burn when I run over an area where I've messed up my pressure or angle, it's punishment for haste! :P

The Super Iridium is a great blade. I think it's at the top of my list along with the Perma-Sharp Super now, because it's held up on the fourth shave when the Polsilver SI began to slip. It's not noisy (which is a minus from me), but it cuts so smooth and clean that it's actually tough not to get a close shave without too much effort. There's still such a minor difference between the other Polsilvers and this that it's kinda silly that all three exist. One blade to rule them all? Maybe this blade. I'm just clearing my bench of all the open blades so I can start fresh with the vintage lot of Spoiler/Schick/Personna lot, I might start off the new year with one of them.

Yeah,

Just can't get it right. It either dries up like chalk or just doesn't lather?

Anyway I moved on from it. I keep it in the shower and use it as a pre/shave mask when I can be arsed! Works ok, menthol feels nice though :)

  • Astra SP
  • Weber Polished SS razor
  • MNS Lime
  • Omega #10005

I swear to the gods above this razor is the absolute duck's nuts. Shaves like a monster and is just visually stunning. Lovely feel in the hand. Ever since I got it I find myself reaching for it come shave time over and over. I can't fault it on any level, its that good.

How are you liking the MNS Lime Nick? It's my favourite of the three I ordered at the moment, it smells great!

Hi Sam, mate I was only thinking EXACTLY this yesterday. It was a stinker in SYD (~40degrees out west) and this just made my shave so much nicer. Lathers best of all their soaps and I really enjoy using it. Great minds think alike. ;)
