Suggest me a razor...

So I'm on the hunt for a new razor to suggest as a birthday gift from the wife...

Currently using a Gillete ball end tech. Now I find this a light a sooky/lite & the handle to be a little on thin side.

I think I'd like to stay with a closed comb, I have light growth and shave Sunday & Wednesday evenings. Unless I have another reason to. So I don't need to mow down a forest.

I like 3 piece also.

Thanks in advanced lads.

Closed comb (or solid guard bar) and 3 piece rules out most vintage Gillettes except - the humble Tech!

In the modern you could look at Above The Tie - loved YKW. Bit expensive but stainless steel and allegedly fantastic

The Weber is almost as well loved and cheaper.

The Feather all stainless is relatively mild by all reports OR ...

The @Drubbing special - Merkur 34C. The razor to beat ALL other razors ....

You're stuck in 2013 Mark

Merkur 30C. I was sold on the 34 as my only razor for nearly 5 years til this. Was only wanting a change up, but it's much less aggressive, just as efficient (which is usually the trade off from a milder razor) and a bit sleeker looking.

Muhles or Jaggers 89 are worth a look. I tried one but didn't like the hollow handles, no heft.

Or, for the cool retro action and mild as you'll ever need razor, the slim is hard to beat. I've never been a fan, but that blade mechanism and adjuster is still way cool.

Forget what Drubbing said and go the Merkur 34C. Although it's a 2-piece razor it is STILL the razor that beats ALL other razors.

Agree with that sentiment. The only reason I've got a Super Adjustable.

Aside from the fact that it would be hard for your wife to find, I've also just realised (thanks to the above @Mark1966 post) there is absolutely bugger all choice in vintage three pieces. So you're basically looking at the suggestions Mark and Drubbing have mentioned.

If you're considering the Above The Tie, consider the iKon SB as well. Then disregard that, and re-consider the Weber. I've never tried it, but for stainless steel, nothing is going to represent better value than it. There's a thread here about it with a good review. I started out with the Merkur 34C, and it's a good suggestion too. A step up in aggressiveness, but a good one. I sold mine to buy an iKon, but that wasn't a big enough upgrade to really justify the money. The shave was just as good with the 34C; I just prefer the iKon now.

A Slim would offer you adjustability and an extremely solid razor. If TTO is an option, a Schick Krona will offer you an exceptionally consistent shave as a similar level of safety and comfort as the Ball End Tech. Nice ones can be had for good money, too.

If I had to pick one...the Weber.

+1 and if I may add, I'd specifically recommend the 1964-1965 version with either the short or long metal knob, as they are heavier.

In closed comb what's wrong with the humble EJ89? Popped the cherry of many a first time wet shavers and still satisfies most….like marrying their first.
Can't help here much though. I started with a EJ89 (still have it and contemplating a sale) but once I tried an open comb I can't look back. So much smoother and closer, but then again I have a beard that needs daily attention but is seen to every second to fourth day, so hard yakka on any blade.

Great option with the 30C, they look really nice AND 'Includes one free Merkur Super Platinum Double Edge Razor Blade to get you started. ' WOW, a free Merkur blade - that will be helpful!

...

True, otherwise I would have suggested the EJ89 Barley Chrome

Actually, I just re-read the OP's original post and noting that it's for a very special occasion (one's own b'day) then I'd like to - instead - suggest an iKon. ShaverHut just got in a fresh batch from the US yesterday. Now these are special!!!…and I'm getting me on of these Open Comb Deluxes me-self. Got to say too, guys like Chris at the Shaver Hut are top blokes into the bargain too.

Well thank you gents!!! struth thats some suggestions...

After some googling etc, i'm leaning towards the Ikon closed comb, or the 30C but more so to the 30C.

I like the ikon's they seem to be my sort of technological/industrial type of thing. While the 30c is a bling looking razor, however all stainless would be nice.

I like the Above the tie Atlas line of razors & a 5 piece set would be awesome!!!! but that could be stretching it a bit....

Yeah, the new system Ebay uses for international postage is ridiculous.
Pay for postage from the seller to a postage forwarding agent acting upon behalf of Ebay, then paying Global Priority for a low dollar item is insanity, particularly when it's multiples times the actual price of the item.

Wonder if this is a deliberate act upon Ebay's behalf due to government pressure or a perception it's an improvement.

You say that but then I just got a kitchenaid artisan delivered for $36! And that went through the pitney-bowes system

I spent my first year or so of DE shaving with a Merkur 34C, and then sold it once I got my iKon safety bar. No regrets on that, but the iKon is not twice (or triple, depending on price) the razor that the 34C is. I think the 30 has the same head, in which case, it probably represents much better value. That said, the iKon provides the option for interchangeable base plates (typically $30-40 each), so although the initial cost is higher, it is possible to get some added versatility with some extra coin. Fair bit of coin though. One thing to note about the iKon is that the brushed steel finish is still fairly succeptible to surface scratches, and is capable of bonding to surface rust from other items. It'll come off, but it's annoying to me that a stainless steel item requires additional care to keep it in good condition. I expected that going stainless might recover a couple of minutes from my shave clean-up, but I spend more time drying and removing the blade from the iKon that I used too with the 34C, in which I almost always left the blade until time to change. Disappointing, but having spent the money, it's now worth it to protect the investment. It's a good, well crafted tool, but it has it's flaws like anything else.

I say this not to discourage you, but to make you aware. A razor is ultimately a tool, and regardless of price, it's going to get dropped or beat up at some point. The iKon won't endure this any better than any other razor, but it is well crafted and effective. Is it good value for money? No. It is, however, a great razor with quirks like any other. Ultimately, if the choice is between an iKon and a Merkur, you're probably going to be happy regardless.

I spent my first year or so of DE shaving with a Merkur 34C, ... I think the 30C has the same head, .

I don't know that it is. I gave my 34C a run today + PSS. Terrible shave (by my standards). A bit irritable afterwards, but shortlived, but I did have that 'felt like I'd shaved' feeling all day. Not as close as I usually get either, and that's adding an extra pass, which probably caused the discomfort.

My technique is sound; it was learned on the 34. But there were always some blades that bit with it, if I took the piss. Feathers - unusable. Astras - needed care. Reds, comfrtable, but a bit draggy slow.

With pretty much any blade I use, the 30C is smoother, milder, yet more efficient. Which is a threesome no other razor has delivered. I'd usually have to compromise on two of those three things. (and god knows, Mark's sent me enough to try...) as well s buying and selling a few other Merkurs over the years). I even found PSS blades a little rough and somewhat meh in the 34C. Awesome in the 30, meh all over again in any other vintage razor like the Slim and SS.

That suggests to me the 30C head is different to the 34c somehow. I even threw in a Feather tonight, that Filo sent me. I need to do a proper shave with one, but even this may well be shaveable in this razor, and I've long given up trying to safely shave with a feather without half a bottle of proraso handy...

May have recommended this one before... But... One of the best DE I have are the Gillette '04. Like the WW1 and before '04s. They're a great shaver and a fantastic part of shaving and world history.

Considering both these statements, I am seriously leaning to the 30C.

I like the ikon, I like the design, I like the interchangeability.

But the 30C is a nice looking razor. Now to drop enough hints, so she gets the right one. ;)

You cannot drop enough hints!

Trust me - send her a link or, better yet, buy it yourself and tell her you have saved her shopping for you!

I can't say you'll have the same experience as I have, but to me, the 34 and 30 are completely different beasts.
