When in Rome

possumbelly

[No giant lemons here]
Spent last week in Canberra. Unfortunately had little time for leisure and failed to find a moment to catch Mark1966 and drool over his collection. Perhaps I'll get another chance some day.

Back home in Melbourne for a week before heading to Rome for a few days. It will be a quick jaunt but should have time to pick up one or ten things such as Proraso supplies and who knows what else. Can't say that I actually "need" anything but how does one pass up the opportunity to buy some great stuff at good prices.

I have heard recently of a Proraso green / menthol AS balm, and have that on my list. Definitely have no need for any Omega brushes so hoping to not see anything too enticing. Will seek out some Marvin toothpastes also.

Anybody aware of easily available shaving supplies I should seek out? I imagine the supermarket shelves will be teeming with great stuff we can only dream about here.

There has been a few comments made recently on W_E.

For example:
"I was there on holiday in the spring. I got a bunch of shaving soaps at a chain store called "Acqua e Sapone" (Soap and Water?) in Ravenna. They had all the Proraso "flavors"."

Apparently Proraso Red is currently in short supply so it's even hard to find in Italy.

As you said, supermarkets like the "Esselunga" supermarket chain, are stocked with Proraso.

Never come across a Proraso menthol balm, be interesting to see it if you find any. Even though I'm on Proraso hiatus in winter, frick it's cold here.

Shaving stuff in Italy is harder to find than you might think. Both my experiences in Sicily and my parents all across the mainland have shown that the Gillette cart and goo revolution has taken over there too. Surprisingly, our best hauls have come from supermarkets and little corner shops. The other thing to do is find a barber who does a proper straight razor shave, and ask him where he buys his stuff. He'll either sell you some himself or tell you where.

If you're interested in the high end and expensive stuff, the profumerie's often stock some shaving stuff if they're carrying the cologne or perfume. Stuff like Acqua di Parma, for example.

I found Proraso in some supermarkets and department stores along with Marvis, plus Palmolive and Palmo menthol (both of which are cheap and good) to be the most common.

It's like a forum, but it's not. It's mostly young/new shavers with a few experienced hands (like LeisureGuy). A different crowd to KYW and other forums.

maybe you can find some little back alley store that has a dusty brick of P.160. A bargain if you can get it for anything less than $10,000 a kilo judging by this IB listing

Alternatively, the occasionally available Figaro is made by the same people that made P160 if my memory is correct. It's usually pretty cheap in the $10-20 for 100-150g range.

Biochimica s.p.a
Made P160
Make Figaro, Fitness, Uomo, Razorock.

According to Joe from Razorock, when he contacted Biochimica, they stated Uomo is different to Figaro/Fitness/Razorock creams, with a slightly different formulation.

I discovered the motherlode of Omega brushes in a shop called "Muzio" in Rome. Also lots of high end Mondial and Kent brushes. Bought a nice mixed boar / badger (Setola and Tasso) and also a pure boar with a beautiful resin handle. Lots of badgers, a few boars and only one synthetic. Also got some Valobra fougere soap, Had to get something else Italian while I'm here.

No Proraso to be seen but lots of Taylor's, Truefitt & Hill, Cyril Salter etc. only Proraso I've seen is the canned goo.

If I hadn't stumbled upon this place, I'd be leaving pretty empty handed in a couple of days.

Now that is an impressive collection of brushes, even by Mark1966's standards!

That's a great selection on offer, but how were the prices? Was it any cheaper to buy over there?

When most of their stock boars go for $10-15, I doubt there'd be much difference. Most of us buy this stuff online anyway, and their costs are often lower than B&M.

Seemed slightly pricey. Example - 19 euro for a standard boar brush with nice solid resin handle. I've picked up similar brushes through Connaught's for about $15 postage included. The badgers - black fibre, 2 band etc we're around 70 euro.

The main thing that was really nice was the huge range and the ability to touch and handle them up close.

Yeah well I don't collection brushes

That is a shite load though - WOW!

"I'll take the top shelf thank you. Yes I do mean the whole shelf. And yes I do want each one gift wrapped individually! Grazie!"

Hey a little tribe of Omega 31025 is pride of place on shelf four (from the bottom)…right next to the red/white/blue handled number. Makes me proud.

What's on the supermarket shelves there? Just Proraso, or can you score LaToja and maybe even some of that German rubbish - you know Tabac, Irisch Moos, etc?
