Shave of the day 2013

You need a shave Sam.

Take yoyur time, enjoy the process :)

Back to the past for me. Took 2 new blades into the shaving area one SE and one of the Gillette Platinums via Mr Knife. Showered and then realised I had no glasses with me. Those of you who follow my exciting and stimulating writings will remember the last time I attempted to set up my SE razor without glasses led to copious quantities of red stuff running down my face. Anyway chickened out for setting up the SE but figured I couldn't go too far wrong in using the super sophisticated method of the TTO Slim. So thats wot I did. In with the blade - on with the Tabac soap off with the whiskers and I must admit for a first use blade it was nice and mild. Could scrape away quite happily with the Slim (set to 7) without any suggestion that I was taking a risk. Even got up under the nose without any strain or Quasimodo contortions.

All good all smooth

You've prompted a serious nerd-out, Eggy. I'm going to prove why I'm a softcock.

I looked at averages for 60-150 years. I'm feeling progressively more ridiculous as I write this post.

The average monthly temperature in Darwin is 32.0 degrees. Look at that graph, 30 is everywhere!

Melbourne averages a pretty cruisy 19.8 degrees.

Your statistics teacher would be mortified at you using a maximum to say that Darwin is the coolest! Southern cities have extreme days amongst average weather, but Darwin weather on average is hot all the time.

My life is a sad existence. I just spent 20 minutes looking this shit up. I'm so bored. I need a hobby life.

Have I successfully justified being a softcock and whinging at 30 degree days? It's tough on us, precious little darlings that we are, and you lot endure this shit all year. So...do I know what I'm talking about?

This is what happens when a psych grad student goes crazy! The internet is not the place for me.

I hope you saw my edit comment at the bottom of my post before you commented?

While Darwin's average maximums are indeed hotter than Melbournes, what is slightly more surprising is that its average minimum is hotter than the average maximum for Melbourne
Mean Minimum Temperature - 014015 - Bureau of Meteorology

The coldest it has ever been up here is something like 10.6ºC. I found this out while I was talking to a friend from the North of England, who then discovered that the average maximum for his hometown doesn't get that high for 5 months of the year!

Now you know why a heatwave is high 20ºs out there!

Paste and Cut; come for the shave, stay for the weather. :)

I confess I only skimmed your comment, it might have saved me some insanity. Does it really never get above 40?

The word nerdy is used too liberally to describe what is in essence being interested and inquisitive. And why do car nerds, in my view the most appalling form of nerdery, get the far sexier moniker of petrol heads? We've got an evaporative air conditioner and I've installed a little weather station which gives outside and inside temperatures and humidities on one display and I get a kick out of seeing the inverse proportionality of temperature and humidity. What kind of nerd does that make me?

However, having weighed everything up, I have to come to the conclusion that comparing temperature graphs of Australian cities defines nerdiness and I think that yes, both Mong and Eggy need to get a life!

At least, to some "degree", I get paid to do this. I've been looking at wind vanes on the BOM site this afternoon which is even less interesting than it sounds.

Nope, never gets above 40, although with the humidity it will often feel at least that hot in the summer.

I've lived in Cairns and Darwin for the last 8 or 9 years, and the hottest I remember was 2 weeks ago in Cairns when it reached 38.6ºC just after the big storms.

Darwin had its hottest day in 36 years in December, when it reached 36.6ºC.

I lived in Darwin for 17 years and that's how you tolerate it; the constant temps.

No crazy highs or lows.

Unlike Perth...44 this week!

FWIW the oddly named Gillette Goal (which was very kindly forwarded to me by the Patriach of this site) has been quite excellent to use. Have only used in my Slim but it's really got a great sharp/smooth balance. I think I'm around 4 shaves into it and still going as well as the first. Easily as good as the best current production Gillette blades I've used based on usage in the Slim only. Keep a look out for it.

Oh and very happy with the Smog 2000 that I acquired from Drubbing. I know he felt it was a bit on the floppy side but I find the backbone just right. Very good latherer and noticeably softer in the tips that my Omega and other Boar brushes. Nice brush, great feel to the handle as well.

Nice to know, about the Goal. I was planning opening my pack next because i like the packaging (!) but your the first person that I've seen comment on it so will give these a go.

No posts since the 16th. Are you all bearded folk nowadays?

P160 Morbido
Smoog 830
34C Merkur
Schick Summink or other (1)
Alum
Nivea ASB "Sensitive"

Finally had a crack at the Slick Schick and returned to the trusty 34C after a couple of months of Slim lovin'.

Awesome shave. My 2 year old was rubbing her face all over mine afterwards and shouting "No more whiskers Dad!, no more whiskers" and laughing her ass off. Engaging in a little faceturbation as I type...sorry :embarrest:

Really hope this Schick performs as PJ indicates and doesn't get feral on me.

I've been using one of the two modern DE razors that I own- a EJ DE89BA11 Barley Chrome.
I have to say, as much as I like the razor from an aesthetic point of view, I'm yet to get a good shave out of it. I must just be too used to the vintage Gillette blade gaps or something.

I find with the EJ that I traded with juggy that I need to use the safety bar more than with the old gillettes and my 34C. I really should pull it out and have another crack with it. They are finished super nice aren't they?!

Hmm, I'll keep that in mind re the safety bar.
Funny you mention the 34C. At the time I purchased the EJ I was originally intending to get a 34C but no-one had stock and I got impatient!

I did get a 38C though- handy for shaving, and bludgeoning someone to death with.

Yes, the EJ has a great finish. I was disappointed to learn that most modern razors aren't made from brass though. I think if I was to purchase another modern razor I'd get something like that one Nick got.

34C is possibly the only piece of "Drubbing Approved" kit in the shaving world. It is a gun razor.

38C is the 34C head with the barber pole handle? 115gm with that handle, that is some heft.

I wouldn't mind having a crack at a 39C somewhere along the way either!

Correct about the 38C.

Well, today was the straw that broke the camel's back. I have now tried the EJ with pretty much every combo of blade / soap that I own, and am still unable to get a good shave out of it.
Obviously its one of those YMMV things- I've read of many people that get great shaves from this razor. Apparently I'm not one of them though.

For the record:

EJ DE89BA11
Astra SP
Shaving.ie badger brush
Proraso Red
TOBS Sandalwood aftershave balm

Passable WTG, average everything else, with bonus irritation :-( Took my time and tried many different angles etc, and paid special attention to the safety bar as per SYD's post.

I really wanted to like this, as it looks fantastic and is really well made. No matter- I'll pop it in the for sale section and fund the acquirement of something different.

P.160 Morbido
Semogue 830...I really need a new brush!
Merkur 34C
Schlick Schick (2)
Dickies WH
MARCO! and Stella ASB

Another top effort from the schick/34C combo. Couldn't help but think how much I enjoy using the 830 lately. Super brush really IMO. I am wondering about something Simpson in best though hrmmm....

I think the only Smog I have left is the 1305. Doesn't get any use though.

I would recommend Simpsons Best, anything else is diminishing returns and highly pricey IMO. If the loft goes too tall, they get too soft for me. 45mm is about as high as I go.

I have nothing to report. I'm pretty much Proraso all the way in summer, cream and soap, so I can use any brush I like, as I prefer boars with soap. But Simpsons are great with soft soaps too, like Cella and Speick. Then you get into the hard soaps, I found they lather up to fluffy for me with a badger.
