Shave of the day 2013

Just had a great shave for the 4th. Folding Feather straight and a Proguard blade. No matter what I do to sharpen my straights I can't get this clean and comfortable of a shave.

Of course, it was independence day. I wish we could have a similar celebration here in Australia. So congratulations I guess! Now I understand your beard growing thing. You must have a desire to look like one of the signatories to the declaration. A noble persuit.

Good result, nicked myself once. Stupid eagerness. need to learn to slow down; it's a drummer's curse.

(How do you know if a drummer is at your front door? The knocking increases in speed)

Strange as it may seem, I don't believe that any of them had facial hair! I won't start in on the 'class struggle' speech.

Shouldn't that be: "The knocking is in time, or "The knocking sounds just like Taylor Hawkins doing his intro in My Hero". If the knocking knocking increases or decreases in speed the knocker is probably pissed but certainly not a drummer I would have thought.

Nah drummers, especially when learning, have a tendency to speed up unnecessarily.

The more excited you get the faster you play sometimes. It requires discipline and training to maintain a constant beat.

Which is why shit drummers play in thrashy sort of bands.

hahahahaha fair call about the mach 3.

Do you want to have a try of my R41?

It's my favourite razor so strictly a trial not a PIF, but you are welcome to have a go if you like.

Hmm...interesting...very interesting. I may just take you up on that Sir Jugsworth.

Welcome aboard mate. Some nice kit there! I'm guessing the Kent is synthetic fibre? How does that go?

Boar Semogue? ...just tried to slip that through without the anti-smogites catching wind

ARKO!
Semogue 830. The finest of boar bristles, artfully dyed to mimic Badger. A sublimely manufactured, ergonomic handle.
Derby (2)
Slim (8,8,4)
Alum
L'oreal ASB

Remembered to give the Derby a bit more breathing space in the Slim this time around. One more good one left in the Derby I think and then it's trash time and onto something more exciting.

The handle is fantastic on the 830. If it had more backbone I would probably buy another one just for having it, but mine went too floppy in the end.

I don't care if the anti smoggites want to burn my castle down, I like Semogues and that's that.

SYD PM me if you want to arrange to meet up and grab the R41.

Again with the backbone.

I'm in the midst of composing a treatise about shaving brushes.

the working title is:

"Why Flowthrough is King and Backbone can Suck my ****"

Preliminary workshopping of the title suggests it may be a little strong ;)

I'll hit you up in a few weeks re: R41. Thanks bud.

"Why Flowthrough is King and Backbone can Suck my ........Thing???.....

FTFY.

It's not so much the lack of backbone but more what led to it, namely supplying a knot with approximately half the hair density it should have because they want to create a soft brush that looks and feels like a badger. They succeed in neither in my view. Nice handles though. Great flow through 'cause there ain't any bristles to stop it. It's easily solvable though, just wrap an elastic band round the base of the knot. Looks like crap but it works.

And why their wives have affairs with the bass player

Merkur 38c
Shark Super Stainless
Omega boar
Godrej cream

I haven't used the 38c in ages. Not sure I get the best shave with it, but damn it is a nice piece of kit. The Omega has also been a bit neglected, a nice brush with a great backbone.

The Godrej cream I got in a trade with JugV2. Quite a nice, easy to lather cream with a good scent.

Lucky last, the shark. I really, really want to like these blades as they are so cheap. Every time I use them though I am disappointed. With the 38c they feel blunt and just seem to tug like a blade past its used by date :-( Seems Rapiras are the best I'll get for a 'cheap' blade.

Merkur 38c
Shark Super Stainless
Omega boar
Ingrams cream

Sadly, the Shark did not improve with age for me. After 3 shaves its always the same- tugging and poor performance.

Ingrams on the other hand continues to impress. Easy to lather and great menthol hit.

Next this week will be a Derby I think- haven't used one in ages.

I've tried 3 Shark blades and tossed them all after one shave. They perform exactly the same way for me. I don't know what people see in them?? On the other hand, I tried my first Feather today. Sharp bade but IMHO no sharper than a Spoiler, plus 12 hours later I can feel a little razor burn which I never get with a Spoiler...

Hmm, that's strange with the Feather. What razor were you using? I've found the Feather to work best in less aggressive razors. Tried it in my Red Tip SS and the results were okay but nothing great, whereas if I use it in a 1940s SS or Flair Tip SS I get consistently good results.

A Slim set at 5 which is the same setting I usually use for a Spoiler. Should I throttle it back to 4 or 3 with the Feather?

Edit: I've also got a red tip SS that I find works great for blades like Astras but is a little aggressive (for me) with a Spoiler. I would say a red tip is about the same as a slim set to 7 or 8.
