Shave of the day 2013

I've tried 3 Shark blades and tossed them all after one shave. They perform exactly the same way for me. I don't know what people see in them?? On the other hand, I tried my first Feather today. Sharp bade but IMHO no sharper than a Spoiler, plus 12 hours later I can feel a little razor burn which I never get with a Spoiler...

Yeah Feathers are over rated and Sharks are the lower common denominator blade against which all other blades are compared. If a blade is worse than a Shark it's not worth the effort. If it's demonstrably better it's worth trying a bit further. Sharks are rough but they won't do you any damage. I found them good for two or three shaves maximum.

You misspelled Derby PJ :p

I am not a fan of Shark either Jaydee. It really is quite fascinating how blades work differently for folks!

I've had no issues with sharks. Not the greatest blade but reasonable in my opinion. Derby on the other hand is dreadful.

P.160 Morbido
Boar Semogue 830
Merkur 34C
Gillette Black (4-5?)
Alum
L'Oreal ASB

If Astra SP wasn't a POS it would be this Gillette Black. Anyone sitting on a stash of these (They've been discontinued IIRC) has done well.

Merkur 38c
Derby
Arko
Omega boar

The Derby is a noticeable improvement over the Shark for me, basically no tugging and fairly sharp. Compared to the Shark (tugging on every stroke, poor cutting performance) the Derby is a winner in my books. Can't agree with your assessment SYD (or JugV2)- I wouldn't call Derby the best blade in the world but I get much better result with it than the Shark.

Today was Sandalwood Sunday at my place. After a hard day's work installing a fireplace a good shave with a New was just what the doctor ordered:

Coupled with a Rapira blade, the New gave very pleasing results. Could easily get away with as single WTG pass using this.

ARKO!
Frankshave Silvertip AKA "Spineless Wonder"
Gillette Slim (6,6,4)
Gillette "The Schpoiler" (1)
Alum
L'Oreal ASB

Whiskers didn't stand a chance!

Busted out Valobra stick this AM after a week or so of nearly exclusively creams.
I still love the Valobra scent :D

Used my newly acquired slim,

2 passes both on 5!

Usually TGN brush, alum and Witchhazel to follow up.

Life was good :)

orright you orrible lot.

todays shave was good.

Gillette Black Plat 2nd shave
R41 scythe
La Toja cream
a brush of sorts
La Toja AS to finish it off

The result was freakin orsum.

Get that up ya!

Nice one Lynchy,. The Slim is a good chunk of brass.

Merkur 34C
Gillette Black O'Clock (1 more than last time)
Alum
Nivea sensitive ASB

Just a quick 2 passer for work. From go to walking out the bathroom in about 6 minutes. Easy shaving with this combo for sure.

Nivea ASB just about empty maybe one or two shaves worth left. This will be the first non blade shaving item that I will have finished rather than throwing away/pifing etc to get rid of it. It's been good but I doubt I'll replace it. Excellent bit of starter kit for sure!

That's an interesting observation and one that I've wrestled with too. I've been through numerous Nivea ASB bottles and will continue to do so. Aside from the fact that I like it, the lure of actually being able to buy something shaving related from a brick and mortar shop is just too great. Other than that I've been through a puck of Mitchells Wool Fat, a puck of Tabac, a stick of La Toja and several tubes of Tabac cream. Lots of stuff's been PIFed and/or given/thrown away.

What? You mean you are meant to finish things?

Nice try, sneaking that one in! When it comes to Valobra scent there is no such thing as "IMHO", it just stinks. End of chat. I stupidly enough added a tiny bit to my amalgamated soap puck so I occasionally get a slight whiff of it inspite of it being mixed in with left overs of Tabac, Speick, La Toja, MWF. All powerful scents by themselves but even combined they can't fully mask the wet carpet stench of Valobra. That feels good, an end of week slashing of Valobra. Still one of the best lathers though.

You went through that stick of La Toja fairly quickly too didn't you?

I am guessing you have more of a monogamous relationship with your shaving soaps/creams than I do.

Yeah I did. Young Jugster kindly gave me another one which I'm saving for a rainy day. I do have my favs I must admit.

Anyhoo back OT....

Bakelite jobbies. One with a Spoiler the other with a Polsilver Stainless.
The Polsilver out did the Spoiler. Must have been a dud Spoiler as it faded badly on the third shave. The Polsilver Stainless is far better than the Super Iridium. The latter sounds infinately sexier but doesn't deliver based on the one blade I've tried. Why the f*** am I still the only one shaving with bakelite razors. There's something seriously wrong with you guys.

I do believe I own one or two of these devices - in my collection of esoteric and the weird and wonderful _ Will have a dig around and join you.

Provided the guard is bakelite then we're on the same page. If it's just a bakelite handle it's neither here nor there.
