Shave of the day 2013

Special day for me today. My first time using an adjustable razor. It's a Slim I picked up from Mark's recent sale.

Omega boar with MWF. Too much soap providing way too much lather but who cares, it's a lather flying razor day.
I used a 3 (or 4?) shave "365" blade. Had a pretty good run with this blade last time I used one.

I set the slim on 1, 3, 9,7, 5, 2, etc. It's like I just pegged a footy card in my spokes and I'm tearing up and down the street.
Loving this thing.
Finished with Proraso post shave thingy for something extra different. I use witch hazel 99% of the time which I like much prefer.

Bodge, glad you like the Slim. It's my favourite razor. YMMV but it will take a few shaves to find your correct number with an adjustable. Different blades may require a different setting. For me a modern blade like an Astra needs a setting around 7 but a Spoiler or a vintage Schick are better at 5. I usually crank it up a bit on the last pass to get at that fiddly bit directly under the nose... Enjoy the Slim.

Haven't been shaving as much as usual over the past month as I thought for the first time in my life I'd give a beard a shot - and surprisingly I kinda like it - gotta keep it groomed up but figure I'll keep that going for a while. I'dtried a bunch of times and always abandoned it after a week or so when it became too prickly/itchy.....which it still kinda is but I think it just gets tolerable.

Still heavily groomed and shaped so shaving just as regularly but prolly 50-75% less real estate to cover! Amazing how that can make your blades last much longer.

Tried a 'Bic' yellow and black wrappered blade the other night - ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE - one of the worst blades I've ever tried. Tossed it in the bin after a few strokes. It'd been in a Slim - so no excuses for it. Really ghastly blade.

I have a personna blade (pif'ed to me by Mark (I think) ages ago) in the Executive Fatboy on number 7. I shaved with it again last night, and realised that it was on it's 6th shave with no loss in performance that I could discern.

I reckon it could go another two shaves easily, but I probably won't risk it.

Waaaaaaay off topic here. There is an appropriate thread for observations regarding bad blades: http://paste-and-cut.com.au/f17/worst-blade-world-682/index3.html#post13481 Only joking Nick!

Anyhooo.....been having a shave off between a vintage Shick and a Spoiler. Each in an identical razor head (my trusty 7O'Clock bakelites). I've sort of lost count how many shaves from each and at times can't remember which blade's in which razor so the whole experiment is a bit of a waste of time but I think I can say overall that the Shick is a bit smoother but it's splitting hairs. They both last for bloody ever that's for sure.

Tabac - mmm Tabac
Brush - mmm nice brush
TM shave - mmm very good

Thats all folks

I've never tried Tabac, but you rarely hear a bad thing about it. Do you have the soap or cream, GT?

A tub of soap - creates a nice easy lather - goes on well and comes of well stays moist and leaves a fairly subtle smell (nowhere near as good as ARKO of course but then you can always rub your face with a urinal block if desperate).

I sometimes wonder what site this is. Most are growing beards at the moment and then there are some who have never tried Tabac! The only thing that puts some people off it is the scent, which is a love or hate thing. Nobody disputes it's lathering qualities. There aren't many better in that regard. Although I've not tried too many creams, I think Tabac cream is also an excellent product. Love the scent of that one too.

You're lucky that SYD the Fanbois Brotherhood Cult of ARKO! chairman lives here in Perth. He's big and he really likes ARKO! At least try and spell it right with the obligatory exclamation mark.

I've just had another ARKO! shave. With a Spoiler on God knows how many shaves (yeah all right it was a PIF from you so I'll forgive you a thing or two!).

I have to agree PJ, there is a thread started elsewhere that highlights a new lot of creams along the lines of lavender and rosebuds etc.
Why can we not have something more in keeping with people who put very sharp metal objects on their face regularly. Like - Essence of Compost Heap - The wonderful aroma when you run over a dog turd while mowing the grass, sneaker odour after a very hot day - there are thousands out there if we must smell botanical how about "Eau de Dandelion" or "Essence of Stinkweed".

R41
Voskhod
Eton TOBS
Semogue 2011 LE
Finished with Eton AS

Couple nicks as I was rushing, otherwise a nice enough shave. I keep forgetting to respect the R41. Might go back to the Progress for a while and retrain myself.

If anyone has a stick of Arko I would love to try it out..? Happy to pay postage or trade you something.

PM me your details mate and we'll sort something out re Arko :cheesy:

As for me, it has been a very busy week to the point that I haven't really been able to take my time and enjoy a good shave. Have just been doing single passes with the Red Tip / Astra / Arko / Tweezerman combo.

.......... Have just been doing single passes.........

Single passes? You mght as well grow a beard like everybody else.

Just had a first shave with a pre-spoiler vintage Gillette stainless blade (that's a mouth full!). Very sharp, very smooth, very nice. Did of course ARKO! it. Can't really go wrong. Based on the one shave so far I'd have to agree with the assertion that pre-spoilers are spoilers without the name and yellow splodge printed on the dispenser.

yeah but are they really really cheap? :)

Well....yeah....relatively speaking. Spoilers with the yellow splodge will generally cost northwards of $1/blade. These were something like 50c/blade for one lot and 46c/blade for another. Not bad for a general e-bay sale. And we didn't have to dupe some poor unsuspecting seller!

By the way, given that it's increasingly unlikely that we're going to land the stash of Shicks, would you like some pre-spoilers instead?

I thank yopu for your kind offer but I have more with the yellow splodge on them than I am likely to use in the forseeable future.
