Shave of the day 2013

Tried again last night with almost the same combo. I used the ultra cheapy $5 Omega instead of the 'Oh so expensive' $15 FS finest badger brush. I even lathered up with hot(ish) water after having left the brush immersed in water for a minimum of 31.73 seconds. There was soapy lather all over the pot, and I lathered for a lot longer than usual. Still no joy - first pass was fine, just enough lather for a careful 2nd pass, and I could forget about the 3rd pass.

I guess I will have to ask the question, how many clockwise/anticlockwise turns do you do, in which order, for how long, and at what speed to load a hard soap up?

AKA how long do you mash your brush in a hard soap to load it up?

Do you bowl or face lather? I've never had any problems face lathering with any soap or cream. Mainly with sticks but I've got one puck of hard soap and of course the obligatory pot of cella. I just keep mashing untill all the wetness in the brush is gone and instead of lather being created you're just stripping wetish soap from the top of the puck. You can feel it and hear it more than anything else. The same sort of change in sound and feel you get when beating an egg. It takes a bit longer with a hard soap and depends on how dry it is, so suggested timeframes or number of clockwise and/or anticlockwise movements is a bit daft. Inspite of the pages of forum waffle dedicated to it, Cella literally takes seconds and is the benchmark in how easy it is to get lather from soap. There are harder soaps but that's all they are; harder and drier and hence take a bit more mashing to get enough softer soap on the brush.

If you bowl lather I've got no suggestions other than dropping it from an appropriate height or giving it to your pet as a feeding bowl and start face lathering. I'm sure bowl lathering was started by barbers because clients would object to a barber pummeling their faces with a brush. There is no logical reason to use a bowl other than in reverence to some barber tradition or because you've seen too many westerns and gangster films.

Face lather. I have no problems with the stick that I have tried. I guess I am just used to how easy Creams, and La Toja are, and am not putting in enough effort.

Want to test out my mystery blades when they arrive?

...........Want to test out my mystery blades when they arrive?

Always! You know I'm not averse to offering up my face and good looks to a potential skin flaying in order to assess DE blades for the greater good. Just the kind of guy I am.

More fascinating news from me

Continued with the Maca Root - certainly lathers like a hairy goat this stuff.
Slim at 7 with shave 3 of the Voskhod blade.
The blade continues to impress me so much so I will push for 4.
Splash of Korous and all done.

On a side note, I am beginning to think I must take a very old school approach to this shaving business - despite only being a couple of years in.

I read some of the threads about pre-shave this and face mapping and 2 or 3 after shave balms , soothers and other what nots to say nothing of mapping your beard growth. Compared to my method of wet face apply lather remove lather with razor -splash aftershave - no harm in the former method I guess just all seems a little Marcoish to me but to each their own.

I'm a big fan of the Maca Root. Just found out it's a plant from originally Peru. Apparently it's safe to eat but can cause goiters. Love that word...goiter. Not sure I'd want to spot one on my body.

It's taken you two whole years to work that out?

Big fan of Voskhods - good to see you're enjoying it.
How do you know what a hairy goat lathers like??
I am the same GT, I don't use balms and witch hazel and skin food stuff, I just shave, wipe and AS.
Suits me.

ARKO!
Frankshave Silvertip makeup brush
Gillette Slim (6,6)
Spoiler (2)
Alum
L'Oreal ASB

Plenty of preshave beard softening in the shower and multiple post shave treatments - Don't want to look like I come from b****y Mt Druitt! :P

I'm pretty sure I have another Vokshod or two floating around. I'll have to give them another try.

SYD let me know if you want a pack of Voskhods, I've got plenty.

I was hoping TSD would be doing another group buy on these, but have heard nothing (not that I look there often).

On an SE binge at the moment. First one with the trusted Featherweight to take the edge of the blade as they're vicious on the first shave. Just did a second shave with the ER Streamline. The closest shave I've had for a long time. Strange really. The Streamline is the exact opposite of what I look for in a DE razor. It's near on open comb which I'm certainly not too fond of when it comes to DE shaving and as heavy as hell compared to my lightweight, bakelite, "looks like a disposable" favourite DE razors. This thing is built like a tank. Puts Gillette to shame.

Have been paying particular attention to soap loading to hand on some tips to eggy. I keep loading with a damp brush (I just dip it in water and shake it out) until it becomes really sticky and you can barely move the brush across the top of the soap. You almost want to dip the brush in water to make it go easier. Which of course you don't do because the reason you've been mashing away is to get the soap to the consistency where's it's sticky and like a thick cream. That's basically it. Forget about the number of swirls or timeframe or the bullshit about hard or soft water.

Possibly, but as you mentioned moving the brush across the soap, in bowl lathering fashion, I thought maybe you were confused. It is winter after all. Older folk get tired more easily :P

Rubbish - we just need more single malt to keep the blood thin and moving (seeing if we can derail two threads with one topic) :)

If you had read my previous post (might take a bit of effort as there are no pictures) which referred to bowl lathering you would have realised that was never going to be the case.

What? Me? Offended? Never. My apologies if I somehow gave the impression that I was! Bad writing on my behalf. I was hoping you'd take the bait regarding the reference to pictures and that I'd end up accusing you of being a heathen and you'd retort with expanding your reference to my age by adding that in addition being old I'm also miserable and so on and so on.

I guess I should learn how to use smileys. But they're just so ugly!
