Shave of the day 2013

Not open for further replies.
Shave 3 with the vintage personna tonight. The second shave wasn't very good and I was a bit dubious about going further with it, but I decided to try it in another vintage razor tonight.
Result: another brilliant shave. The 2nd shave must have been an aberration and I must have got something very wrong.

These are feeling as good as the spoilers so far (when I don't screw up) I just hope they last as long.

I really liked the Personna from RM's vintage PIF up until about the fifth shave, it seemed to drop off remarkably quickly after that. Great shaves at the start though.

I'm pretty boring these days. I've stuck with the Duke 2 and Proraso, and have been trialing the iKon OSS with a 'Maltese' Plat for a few weeks. Great combo, smooth and close every time.

I can eek about 8 shaves out of them if I really take care of the blade by keeping a very good technique. Anything more tends to result in bloodletting.

The Personnas are damn sharp at the start and seem to retain that initial 'burr' better than the Spoilers, but the Spoilers edge them out for longevity.

I don't think you can call the iKON OSS 'boring'.

I kept the Personna with six shaves on it, so I'll go back and have another go soon. My main problem was that it was starting to drag and that was giving me grief on my neck, but my technique has gotten better over the last few months. I'll give it another go in the OSS.

Definitely not! It's a great piece of kit, the dual head is actually pretty handy. Both sides are very mild, but the open comb is great on the neck for those shitty patches of random beard direction. It's a good companion to the fairly aggressive safety bar base plate, I can't imagine any circumstance where one of those two wouldn't provide a nice shave.

I wonder if there would be any interest in a pass around? I might be convinced to part with my new love for a few weeks.

I'd be keen to try it out - in exchange I would let my beloved R41 do the rounds if anyone is keen to try it.

A steppe too far

Voskhod blade (Russian) a steppe too far geddit huh? OK I thought it was good but the razor had seen better days - felt like a thousand microscopic Cossacks doing their dance and trying to kick the whiskers out. Live and learn try something new next time.

I'd be happy to do a swap, Jug. My only request would probably be that the package gets insured, but aside from that, feel free to PM me at your leisure and we can make arrangements if you'd like.

For sure mate, insurance is cool.

As noted elsewhere I'm on holidays for a week then I will do the mailing :)

Sounds good!

Gave the OSS a go with a Spoiler tonight, and though I think the Schick goes a little better in the mild head, I still had a great shave. I much prefer to face lather these days, the Duke makes it so easy. I'm a little concerned that the Duke is still shedding the occasional hair, but it's probably to be expected if I'm going to scrub away with it. Proraso Red in the bowl tonight to switch up, and I actually think it has a point of difference with the same in tube form. The bowl isn't really air tight, which means that by the time you get it, it's dried out a little. For me, this is a good thing. I find that my best lather comes from an initial loading, an application to wet face and quick scrub, then going back to the soap bowl and loading up a little more. Doing this helps me to ensure that I build a good, wet and slick lather that actually has enough product to be thick and cushioning too. The drier soap seems to pick up nicely, and personally, I find it easier to load from a bowl than go back to the tube.

The OSS doesn't always provide the closest shave, even with a sharp blade. I've found that a first WTG pass with the safety bar, followed by an XTG pass and touch-ups with the open comb provides a perfectly comfortable and adequate result. It would be interesting to compare the open comb OSS side to another mild open comb like the Merkur 15C to see how relaxed it really is.

Alum and TOBS Eton College to finish. Neither gave me the desired sting, which was a nice validation of my technique at the moment but disappointing nonetheless. It's been really pleasant to strip my shave routine back to absolute basics, same brush, soap, razor and blade. Now that I've eliminated my irritation problems almost entirely, I get an extra shave each week. Bonus!

Currently second shave in on what is a very vintage 'drugstore brand' blade, seems to be late 70's or early 80's due to the lack of a barcode on it.

The blade itself is easy to identify since the printing on them hasn't changed for about 35 years - it is your basic 'Israeli Personna' or sometimes known as Crystals. Even comes in the standard Personna styled dispenser. I'm not sure they are Israeli though, the pack states made in the USA so it could have been prior to production moving to Israel.

The shave itself - first was on Saturday and felt patchy afterwards, blade was dragging a little but not quite pulling. This morning's shave had left me with zero irritation but I am not smooth on my neck or jawline. Can even feel a touch of whisker on my cheeks 3 hours later.

Might pass these on to another Personna Lover. I don't think these have gotten any worse over the years. You are probably better off buying new.

How do you think the older Personna/Crystal blades compare to the new 'Lab' Blues/Med Preps?

Nope, the Lab/Meds are better. Higher quality grind and hone.

Knocked down 5 days growth this AM.

TM with Gem Jr and the Slim,

Fresh spoiler, TOB's rose cream, TGN brush.

Was a quick simple and smooth affair!

Ingram's menthol
Semogue 830
Merkur 34C
Iridium Super (1)
alum
ASB

I went back on my word about loading a PSS when I spotted the Iridium Super (Blue and grey diagonal wrapper) Wowee wow. I forget who sent these different "silvers" to try so I apologise but this one is cream of the crop! Very sharp, very smooth - I will be most impressed if it can hold up for 6+ outings.

Closest shave I've had in a while as it was so nice I made a full 3 passer.

Shave (6) with the vintage personna (4 in the eclipse) and no signs of deterioration so far.
I think shave 2 must have been an aberration, and the reason for that bad shave lies elsewhere than the blade.

I almost want it to go bad quickly so that I can test out some of my other new goodies.

Weather forecast: starting to get hotter.

Well I think so anyway, otherwise why would I be looking in the cupboard for some aftershave that is more cooling than Floyd Vigoroso? I guess some Aqua Velvet may be on the cards soon if I can still buy it somewhere.

Vtg Personna (7)
Usual accoutrements.

Osage Rub might be up your alley, mate. It's supposed to be pretty damn frosty on the cheeks.

First darwin shave.
Progress on 4.
Maltese platinum
Proraso green soap
T & h Badger
Finished with some "oriental spice booster" that I think Mark gave me.
Lathered up a treat in Darwin water.
Two passes and I was smooth as a greased goose.
I wonder how many shaves before the blade gets rough.

Very good indeed
Macca root - I do like this stuff might get some soon
New Voskhod in the Slim at 7.

Scrub scrub scrape scrape - feeling lazy so only did a single pass but still ended up with a SHBBS that I was quite happy with.
Also just did a quick count of what are regarded as good blades and I have 70 odd SE blades 60 Spoilers 80 Gillette Platinums and my 50 Slick Schicks plus of course 9 Voskhods.

I suspect as I am now 63 these may quite possibly see me out (and if they don't I have a bunch of odd and assorted blades that one tends to acquire).
Happy camper is me.
