That does seem to be a problem with these older blades. I was researching the Personna 74s the other day as some have come up on ebay, and I have seen a few people mention using them for an entire month!
I've pretty much set the Fatboy on 7 as that is what I saw everyone else use. I presumed that 1 was mild as, and 9 was very aggressive. Reading the settings you say you used it makes me think I was completely incorrect.

No that's how I read it 9 = cut your face off 1 = baldeless.
Not that I am any authority to be listened to.
I tried 7 originally but it felt too aggressive. Maybe it's was just noob-ness?

The choice of razor this rotation comes as a result of a conversation with my father in law. Back story- he helped me to install a fireplace, and as part of me saying thanks I gave him a mini 'DE shaving starter kit' that I put together, including a mint English Fat handle Tech. He loved it, but his comment about the razor was that he remembered trying one of these years ago and that it was 'almost as good as those Bic disposable ones' :blink:
Now I'd never say a Fat handle Tech is the best DE razor ever, but I've never had any issues getting a great shave from them. It has been a while though so I thought I'd better re familiarise myself.
Great results. Just a case of getting the angle right I think.

Test drove a blade I got in a swap with Glenos with an oldish soap that I have struggled to work out how to use previously.
Other than the La Toja which I have had zero problems with I always seem to struggle working out how much to load soaps up, and failed again today. I barely had enough for a 2nd pass. Operator error I know, but soaps in tubs always seem to need more work than I expect to load them up that a quick wipe over the face that La Toja gets.
Not a bad shave, but will get a better idea of the blades effectiveness when I combine it with a cream lather.

I like dropping the slim down to 4 for any ATG stuff. All the heavy lifting should be done by then and I find it seems toactually shave closer at that point than with a bigger blade gap.
WTG and XTG I'm anywhere from 9-5 depending on the blade and how old it is. eg I'll Have a fresh Derby at 8 but a fresh PSS will be at 6.
It may just all be wank but it's fun to fiddle with the razor so why not
You're not using enough water with your brush - I can almost guarantee it.
I was dipping the brush in water far more than I normally would with a cream, but I shall take your idea on board and try again.
Give the brush a soak for a good thirty seconds then shake the excess off. If you're only dipping the tips in then that might be the issue.
Marco's here!! Finally out of the closet. JugV2 is a strange name for the son of the son of the son of an Italian barber.
Maybe not a 30 second soak, but the brush was fairly wet, and shaken, not stirred. I was talking about adding more water while lathering when I mentioned dipping the tips in.

Do you use hot water or just Darwin Cold?
I use a boar with hot water and Proraso soap, I get a lather with enough for three passes easily. It's all trial and error - it may be your soap is not a great latherer, that happens sometimes. Are you getting this result with all soaps or just this one?
I only have a very cheapy bore ($5 Omega) that I don't think is up to the quality of the $10+ ones, but the other night I was using my FS Finest Badger which will normally lather up La Toja in a breeze. That is the only other soap I have really used so far.
Well maybe a bit exaggerated based solely on a suggested brush soaking time but if you'd followed that up with a recommended swirling of the brush clockwise and then anti clockwise 35 times across the surface of the soap followed by a silent tearful prayer to your great grandfather who was a barber in the back streets of Napoli it would have been a dead giveaway.
Tried again last night with almost the same combo. I used the ultra cheapy $5 Omega instead of the 'Oh so expensive' $15 FS finest badger brush. I even lathered up with hot(ish) water after having left the brush immersed in water for a minimum of 31.73 seconds. There was soapy lather all over the pot, and I lathered for a lot longer than usual. Still no joy - first pass was fine, just enough lather for a careful 2nd pass, and I could forget about the 3rd pass.
I guess I will have to ask the question, how many clockwise/anticlockwise turns do you do, in which order, for how long, and at what speed to load a hard soap up?
AKA how long do you mash your brush in a hard soap to load it up?
