Shave of the day 2013

Nice shave but my hair...OMG I need a haircut. I look like a frickin' mop.

Me too. These days, I have to keep a hair-tie in my bathroom for when I shave to keep my hair off my neck and away from my face. I'm getting perilously close to a mullet. The horror!

Is it strange that I love shaving but I hate haircuts?

Been rocking my Merkur 30C with my usual (2) blades and soap stuff (more than 2), for a few weeks. Great razor, and I've tried a few.

If you like the closed Merkur head, but find the 34C/HD a bit much sometimes, the 30C is worth a look. Same head, less heft, allows you to finesse where required. I really wasn't expecting anything much, just a head I like in a shiny new package, but it's been a surprise that the change in weight and balance can make a significant difference.

Oh and...

GO FREO!

I was there. The score flattered sydney, big time.

PSS...NFI why It's been so long since I used one of these. Superlative stuff!

Well after trying a fifth shave Voskhod on a sixth day beard ouchy ouchy I decided I was due a treat.

Shiny new SE blade in the Gem.
Shiny new Slick Schick in the Slim set to Seven (anyone else notice all the Ss in that sentence :) )
Last of the Macca root and whatever brush was nearest to hand.
I would have praised the creator of this method to the skies but then thought it might be regarded as self abuse and not appropriate for such a refined website.
Any lovely shave.

And now for something completely different. What is all this beard mapping stuff. I have looked closely and mine grows outwards from the face until gravity causes it to droop downwards. I gather it is about finding area where your beard might swirl to the left, swing to the right or go straight up and collapse on itself. To my simple minded way of thinking, unless you ahve a 3 dimensional totpgraphical map of your face glued to your shaving mirror, anything you hit with a sharp enough blade should be removed from your face whatever direction it was originally headed. I just magine some of the conversations where most people would talk about needing a haircut but the mappers would talk about needing to get their face mapped again. Could ead to some very strange looks. (And absolutely no offenec meant to those who do such things and believe it helps I was just pondering it and came up with a number of Monty Python sketches around the activity).

Some people do elevate it to rocket science. It's simple though. Having investigated the direction of hair growth (i.e. mapping my beard), I now know which directions I can shave for maximum comfort. If I was to just shave from top to bottom from face to neck, I'd be fine on my face, but I'd be going XTG or ATG all across my neck and that would cause irritation. A quick look tells me that I need to shave center-to-outside on the top half of my neck, and from bottom to top on the lower half. It's just a formula for a comfy shave to me. It really shouldn't be any more complex than that, and any goose that needs a map is probably also the type of person for whom the "do not iron clothes while wearing them" warning label is for.

You should have a late night show, GT. We could use some good tv!

Now you're just being silly Glen

You really should become a member over at YKW. I'd sign-in just to read the reactions your posts would get. They'd range from arrogant, smug and patronising to downright vitriolic.

Much prefer to stay here thanks where a piss take is regarded as just that not as some existential threat to ones consitooshanal rights to arm bears or whatever.

Simpson chubby dipped into
CADE scraped off with
Dovo stainless

And I have finally figured out how to get a stainless as smooth as carbon steel.....

Strop more! Its a tougher steel but you can feel it get smooth on the leather. Hard to explain but you can feel it when it happens.

I was trying to decide what to do for hardware this morning when I had a little lightbulb go off.

My Rocket HD has been consigned to the back of the drawer for a long time as I don't really have any blades I find to work better in it than in the 34C or the Slim. In a flash of brilliance I thought about trying to tame that first shave or two with the Spoiler that I find a little agressive feeling.

The end result isn't particularly closer than my usual three passer but in-shave this is a super smooth combo, effortless! Really topshelf! Superlatives!! Certainly have a crack if you have this blade and razor combo

The only bad part about the whole shave was fishing around for the HD and discovering that I hadn't in fact removed the blades from every last one of my out of use razors. EJ gave me a good bite on my thumb, a bit of claret flowed but the cuts are so clean that a minute of pressure and the half inch slice sealed up nicely. Gave me a good example to show my three year old about never, ever touching Daddy's bathroom things!

Being of this ilk, how can I not contribute today: Our special day!!

Very nice shave:

Today i reached into the shave bunker to try out a new product. I really recommend putting all your shave gear in one spot. It helps you realise you really don't need to purchase any more gear haha

Simpson chubby 2 super badger, its super!!! But holds a little too much water that drying the brush is difficult.

Merkur futur with astra blade (so smooth for me)

Quick brush of hair with kent military style brush

Splash on some witch hazel

Rub in a drop or two of jojoba oil

Nice smelling soap, slick stuff. I will need to play around a bit more. I could have used a bit more cushion I think. The Spoiler/HD combo was not as smooth as with the Ingrams earlier this week. Still an easy 3 passer that is nice and close.

Boy oh boy a near disaster. Water was in the sink razors were sitting - eager to attack and the Macca Root was rooted. Not enough for any Forensic Tv show to find the slightest molecule. There I was wet face wet brush and nothing on the face - frantic looking around and then a sudden peace descended on me. I realised it had ben along time since I had smelled like a Parisian pissoir so Arko it was. Scrubbed on the stick and lathered away - noice it was really noice. A satisfying TM later I was smooth and sweet? smelling. And I was shaved.

You told us not that long ago that you'd finished your Macca Root. You're losing it Glen.

Ah PJ the lack of understanding of the young. I did look back over my previous post and saw that I had indeed finished the macca root. Unfortunately, as one gets older, ones brain tends to get full and in fact at times overfull. You will find that occasions will arise when you wake up in the morning and, if you sleep on your side, some excess information will have dribbled out of your ear through the night. In this particular case the "it" that you refer to me losing was the bit of brain that dribbled out between shaves that contained the memory of "the macca root tub is empty". Let me say however I am delighted that I can count on one such as yourself PJ to keep reimplanting these memories.

Best Regards
Brian (I think)

Shaved yesterday before noon with my Feather Str8 and a professional blade(3rd shave on the blade). It about 20hrs later and I'm still presentable. You really can't duplicate these shaves with a 'classical' str8.
