All good.
As has been said many times by comrades far wiser than myself, technique and patience is more important than anything else.
 
Ow Ouch Nasty

The results of one shave too many with my SE blade.
No cuts or slashes but it felt more like it was pulling than cutting - lesson learnt.
Finished with the red tip and Indian Wilkinson - a blade I have come to really like.
As this is a bit of an upside down post, Cella (and I really dont notice the scent) and a new Badger from the UK - I know have 5 brushes of various sizes and will line em up for a photo shoot one day.
 
Today's effort:

The MFW/Speick/Tabac soap mix.

Vulfix 2189 boar/badger. Ideal soap and face lathering brush.

7 O'Clock bakelite DE with an Astra SS. By far my favorite DE razor. Moderately aggressive, extremely light. Complete control.

@ Glen- I find that SE blades as they get older don't cause any pain, they just don't produce as good a shave. Unlike DE blades which actually get seriously nasty in my experience.

I probably agree - the ow ouch was in refernce to the pulling rather than cutting that went on - I will restrict myself to 4 shaves per blade until my Clog Pruf arrives.
 
Didn't end up shaving until about 1pm today when it was quite warm. So the obvious choice was Proraso!

So cold water shave with Proraso soap, Semogue 1305 and my Fatboy on 7, finished off with the Proraso splash.

I'm actually finally getting to the end of the Proraso - which was my original soap. Well I'm not actually at the end but the end is in sight. Not sure what I will do when I finish. Might not buy another but try something else.

There is nothing better with cold water on a hot day though!
 
Shaved at 7pm

Slim adjustable on '7'
GBE blade
Semogue 1305 brush
MWF soap

3 passes, and touch ups on the right neck, chin and upper lip
Very close shave as I did touch ups on the trouble areas, BBS except for the LHS neck (which I didn't do any touch ups on as normally that's not a problem - I guess I should have though)

No aftershave, PC pour homme (old version) cologne.
 
Went for a slightly different blade today. Out came the Gillette Silver Blues. Damn these things are sharp!

  • a fresh Gillette Silver Blue
  • Smoggie 730HD
  • TOBS Jermyn

Well, it mowed down 3 days growth like it was an overnight stubble :omg:

Seriously love these blades due to the fantastic levels of effortless glide through the whiskers that they have. Very sharp - approaching Feather levels, yet very smooth. I get a few weepers with these, yet I don't feel raw like the Feathers often do. Possibly a better blade than Iridiums in my book, plus they are cheaper. Still expensive as they are discontinued.

Has got to be one of my favorite combos.

No problemmo of course.
 
I'm trying to quantify the difference in having the slim set to a high number or a low number so the the only change from previous shave is the setting.

Slim, set to 6 (previously 4)
Wilkinson Sword blade
Windsor soap, no-name brush
Thayers original witch hazel

Maybe a bit closer shave with the slim set to 6. Hard to tell.
All good though.
 
Frankenbrush (Peerless) with TGN Finest. Not a looker, great performer.

Tabac stick.

7 O'Clock bakelite with Astra on third shave. The problem with this razor is that it's just too easy to get a fantastic daily shave. There's no challenge.

Alum, tea tree cream and moisturiser.
 
Didn't listen, and changed things up today with a (now) obvious drop in shave quality.
EJ DE89
EJ Shaving Cream (sampler came with the razor)
Frank Shaving Finest Badger brush (arrived last Friday)
3rd shave on the Crystal blade
EJ Sandalwood aftershave balm

My first lather with the FS was fine with proraso, but I just couldn't seem to get the EJ cream to work the same. I think it was maybe a little dry on the first pass, and then too thin on the next one.

Really wasn't keen on on the soap, or the aftershave balm. If the TOBS or Nanny's smell anything like these i will be looking to shift them on.

Pretty disappointing all round really. Will change the blade, but go back to the original routine like you all recommended from tomorrow onwards.

Nivea balm.
Trafalgar limes as.

Mark what do you think of the EJ cream listed on your post? I used it for a few weeks then PIF'd it..I just didn't find it worth keeping.

Nice new shiny and sharp SE blade in Gem Featherweight
Bluebeards revenge cream (still confused why previous owners objected to it)
The one and only original Blobby (accept no substitutes)
Finish with Indian Wilkinson in the Red Tip (nowhere near as good as the slim)
Splash of Musgo (via Drubbing) to finish.

All good all smooth.

No objective per se to it on my part. Just not a cream guy. They all seem to have too powerful a scent. Being more of a liquid I guess that makes sense but the olfactory sensation you get when opening a tub or squeezing some out of a tube generally sort of puts me off. Of the creams I've tried Bluebeards produces lather very akin to tallow based soaps. The only cream I occasionally use is Tabac which also has a much more powerful scent than Tabac soap but it's a scent I like. However Tabac cream is ridiculously expensive. A tube will give you 30-40 shaves which is a number you'd hardly notice with a soap. But going in to a decent chemist and actually buying some is an unheard of luxury here in WA so I'll probably keep using it on that basis alone.

I always rinse with cold afterwards. Just cools the skin and face down before slapping on any after shave treatments. Supposedly closes the pores too but that's probably a load of bollocks.

Oh goody if three of you like it I have something new to try - next shave is a cold water rinse job. Not quite brave enought to go the whole hog and do a full cold water shave (actually sounds potentially painful).
